The 3T Exploro Ultra is a gravel bike launched earlier this year and is the third Exploro to be designed by Gerard Vroomen and made by 3T, although should more accurately be labelled as a counterpart to the 3T Exploro Racemax. The Exploro Ultra uses a frameset design 3T says is aerodynamically optimised around B tyres in the mm range. While the bike is an extreme example of trying to blend to apparently disparate riding genres, Vroomen has leveraged the transformative effect of tyres size and pressure brilliantly. The Exploro Ultra marries extreme off-road capability with a fast ride on road to create a versatile and distinctive design, though one or two spec details on this model may be worth reconsidering. While both bikes have the same maximum tyre clearance of 61mm x B, 3T says that where the Exploro Racemax has a frameset aerodynamically optimised around 35mmmm C tyres, the Exploro Ultra has been shaped to work best with B tyres at the upper end of its clearance capacity, around 55mmmm. Since its inception the Exploro platform has never garnered universal approval, with some questioning the efficacy of focussing on aerodynamics in a gravel bike, potentially at the expense of other attributes like comfort.

With that in mind, Vroomen says wind-cheating features are as important on the best gravel bikes as they are on aero road bikes. However, while the Racemax is designed, from an aerodynamic point of view, to work best with mm gravel bike tyres , 3T says there's an appetite for an aero advantage with even chunkier rubber. To do that, 3T has tweaked the down tube shape, with the narrower section now 60mm wide rather than 50mm. In short, 3T says the new Exploro Ultra offers: "aerodynamics to get you through the easy stuff fast, massive tyres to get you through the tough stuff safely, and total flexibility to choose a standard, dropper or suspension seatpost. The problem is, those tyres are big, really big," says 3T. Whereas hanging on to c may feel like keeping things the same, but actually makes the whole tyre much clumsier, throws off your geometry, fit, toe clearance, handling. So we top out our c tyre width at around 46mm WAM for the Ultra and then switch to b. While the Exploro's extreme tyre clearance is designed to allow riders to venture onto ever-rougher terrain, 3T has avoided adding suspension. If it doesn't, then just keep it fast, light and efficient. Instead, all the suspension is designed to come through the tyres.
Despite those big footprints, the Exploro Ultra is still anything but slow — at least not like you might expect. While both bikes have the same maximum tyre clearance of 61mm x B, 3T says that where the Exploro Racemax has a 3t exploro ultra aerodynamically optimised around 35mmmm C tyres, the Exploro Ultra has been shaped to work best with B tyres at the upper end of its clearance capacity, around 55mmmm, 3t exploro ultra. Plus, a simple move to a classic It looks almost like the RaceMax that I reviewed two years ago , but two key differences really set the new 3T Exploro Ultra apart. Tweaked gravel aerodynamics that are now optimized for mountain bike width tires AND a good old-fashioned round The first Exploro sold us on the idea of aero gravel. Then, the Exploro RaceMax took it to another level with an even more giant aero downtube and aerodynamics optimized for a smaller range of gravel tires mm wide.

The 3T Exploro is a chameleon, a ludic reimagining of the performance capability of the gravel bike. Ridden both on and off road it is a top-tier racer, marrying the very best of multiple disciplines to give you one of the most enjoyable and varied ride experiences available. Aerodynamically optimised and compatible with road, cyclocross and even mountain bike tyres — the Exploro is not only versatile but unrivalled in performance potential. The Exploro is unique in the radical scope of its performance — designed so that it can accommodate c road and cross tyres, or b MTB tyres whilst retaining the same overall wheel diameter — it gives perfect and consistent handling with all set ups. At once a winner on ultra-fast road runs, mixed asphalt and gravel routes or even tough off-road trails, the Exploro is gravel riding redefined. In designing the Exploro, 3T utilised extensive wind-tunnel testing at 20mph, recording the effects of mud, fluid storage and knobbly tyres to settle on a construction which is aero-optimised to real world riding conditions. This precise level of aerodynamic refinement means that you can go fast, whatever the conditions. Where there are headwinds or crosswinds, the Exploro experiences considerably less air resistance, meaning that you can always ride without compromise. Remarkably, a muddy Exploro with 40mm knobbly tyres and two water bottles is consistently faster in aerodynamic simulation than an equivalent round tubed road bike with 28mm slicks and no water bottles. The Exploro frameset is constructed from innovative Sqaero tubing which synthesises strength, stiffness and streamlining to give unrivalled aerofoiling qualities.
