Built originally in , with a freshly re-tubed professional steel boiler all original plate certificates included , this is a solidly built and ready to rally machine. She's on a new 10 year professional boiler ticket and although the top end is not fresh and new, it still turns over nicely without blowing past too much. It's one of the freest turning over Traction Engines we have ever had in! The paintwork and lining is not bad either, there is certainly the odd chip and scuff all over the engine as you'd expect for a rallied engine, but the overall effect is still tidy, and we think the livery suits it particularly well. All the usual bits and bobs are there, crank pump and injector to get the water in, and a water lifter to fill up the tank. Mechanical lubricator on top of the cylinder. The tires are glued onto steel rings so that you can still see the steel strakes underneath showing through. I consent to Terms of Privacy. Steel boiler by Live Steam Models, fitted with expanded tubes, psi working pressure, feed by injector and mechanical pump. It is attended
This fantastic engine is larger than what we usually deal with. Built to a high standard with castings and boiler produced by Live Steam Models. This one has been put together with great attention to detail by a talented engineer and is certainly an eye-catching model. It seems to have led a bit of a charmed life, never really doing much work, just pottering about the previous owners garden, being too large to make it past the gate. As such it is in fantastic condition both aesthetically and mechanically. It has seen such a small amount of use that there are still machining marks in the trunk guide and paint on the gear teeth! Runs nicely in both forward and reverse and moves nicely through the gears with high and low speed.
They later settled in Hoo near Rochester, Kent where his mother remarried to Rev. Thomas grew up to work on a farm and by , he was running his own farm with a modest employment of 22 workers. Towards the end of the s, when still running the farm alongside an agricultural engineering business, he started to change the world…. The idea of a self-propelled steam engine was nothing new however, at this point, it had not yet been met with success with other designs failing to hit the mark. Portable engines were already relatively commonplace on farms around the country but needed to be moved into position by horses. In doing so, saw the first viable traction engine! The initial prototypes still needed to be steered by means of a single horse however, by , Aveling had devised a steering alterative meaning it could be driven into position exclusively by the farm workers, cutting down significantly on the horses needed to be kept at no small expense by the farm. In partnership, Aveling went on to patent a series of advancements which helped shape the traction engines we still see today. He devised the arrangement whereby the horn plates are part of the firebox outer wrap to mount the crankshaft; he patented two-speed gear change and then, later, he worked on valve-gearing to reverse an engine.

See us on:. I've had this Foster squirelled away in the stables up at home for months, waiting for a chance to do something with it. As the workshop gets ever busier building new locomotives, the chances of this getting in any time soon are getting more and more remote, so here it is, wheeled out into the daylight for the first time this year. A beautifully built 4 inch scale Foster - I would rate it as one of the top two or three I've had to this design over the years. Machining is very crisp throughout, paintwork well done, not overly flamboyant and in good condition, detailing is excellent with correct use of locking nuts on bearing caps, thread holes for jacking screws in the valve chest cover, canvas-covered check chain between the main steering chains - the whole thing is a particularly well made engine.

Steam tests in the icy drizzle! Address Line 1. Home Meet the team Events Workshop facilities. The reason for its lay-up was a perforated tube in the top row of the boiler, strange given the condition and thickness of the others is good. It has been test run on air and driven about the Maxitrak car park. Although this is a steamable model there are some areas that are incomplete. The engine has been built with generous use of stainless steel, including the ashpan, fairleads and valve rods, which goes a good way to keeping it looking so clean.
