The show focuses on three young monsters—Ickis, Oblina, and Krumm—who attend a school for monsters under a city dump and learn to frighten humans. Many of the episodes revolve around their zany hijinks after making it to the surface in order to perform "scares" as class assignments. The series premiered on October 29, on Nickelodeon. The episodes follow the adventures of Ickis, Oblina, and Krumm, three young monster friends attending a monster school whose headmaster is The Gromble. The show is set in New York City , demonstrated throughout the series by the presences of the Empire State Building and the IND Subway System , and in the episode "Monster Make-Over" when Ickis refers to himself as "the ugliest, slimiest, razor fanged, sharp clawed, monster menace this side of Newark! The monster community includes a working economic system using toenails as currency.

Real Monsters is an American animated television series and the fifth Nicktoon. It is also the second animated series developed by Klasky Csupo for Nickelodeon after Rugrats , running for four seasons from October 29, to December 6, The series revolved around Ickis , Oblina , and Krumm , a trio of students in the Monster Academy, a college for monsters training to scare humans. Most of the episodes were about avoiding getting in trouble with their teacher, the Gromble. The tapes each contained three regular-length episodes or in the case of the latter tape, one half-hour episode and one regular-length episode. These two tapes were re-released after the license moved to Paramount Home Video , with two extra episodes added on each of them. The first season was released as a manufacture-on-demand DVD set exclusively sold on Amazon. Just a few months later, however, the video license for Aaahh!!! Real Monsters , among other Nicktoons, was given to Shout! Factory , who re-released the four season sets from October to June though the final season was included early in a "Complete Series" set in October
