Kindly note this review is of the former Premium Economy Spaceseat which was found on select Air New Zealand aircraft. The seat is no longer in operation. I do miss these seats! I flew to and from Los Angeles with Air New Zealand; whom now happen to be one of my favourite airlines.

As I'm a huge fan of the Air New Zealand Premium Economy Spaceseat I wanted to experience what I thought could have been my final flight in one as the Spaceseat is now being replaced as part of the ER fleet refubishment that began in February. The Spaceseat configuration is a configuration. Middle seats and outer seats are both different, with the inner seats aimed at couples traveling together, and the other seats for individuals. I much prefer the inner seats due to the centre armrest that can be lifted up meaning I sleep incredibly well. Unlike some airlines who simply pitch Premium Economy as marginally enhanced Economy offering, Air New Zealand's offering is far closer to Business than Economy. The Spaceseat is either loved or hated, and this has no doubt played a part in Air New Zealand deciding to replace it with a more conventional business class style recliner seat during the refit - I'm sure the fact they're going to fit 10 more seats into the same cabin has nothing to do with the decision making process! Present on the seat was a pillow, blanket, water bottle, amenity kit and noise cancelling headphones. I personally use my Bose headphones as they're vastly superior. After take-off crew delivered a hot towel and delivered drinks And then seemed to disappear. Meal service was incredibly slow and when you've left Auckland at pm my preference is to get the meal out of the way so I can sleep. In Premium Economy the meal tray complete with starter and desert is delivered to your seat, and the goal is to deliver the main course not long after this.

The two seats on the fuselage sides of the cabin are angled toward the fuselage, while in the center section, one seat is angled to the left and the other angled to the right. One of these is the standard-size you would find on any typical long-range aircraft and the other is slightly larger, however they both have a feature wall and music piped-in!

No matter how you fly to New Zealand from North America, it is going to be a long flight. While a flight this long is tolerable in economy class, we have always found it well worth the extra money to upgrade to either Business Class, or Premium Economy. And, since we are flying to New Zealand to take a 5-star Silversea Cruises' voyage, it only makes sense to go in style. Air New Zealand offers Economy, Premium Economy and Business Premier on both types of aircraft; however, there are some distinct differences. When we boarded the plane in LAX and saw our assigned seats, we first thought we were in the Business Premium section of the plane, but were surprised to learn that these seats were, in fact, located in Premium Economy.

Fifth-freedom routes -- routes operated by an airline between two foreign countries as a part of services connecting the airline's own country -- mean you can fly some airlines on unexpected routes. I was waiting for award availability to open up for another review flight as well as my passport to be returned after a visa application , so we ended up not booking this flight until two days before departure. Related: 3 reasons to fly premium economy and 1 reason not to. Or you can try to book an award. But doing so can be difficult, since premium economy awards are only bookable with some loyalty programs. But be sure to check availability before transferring. Related: A guide to earning transferable points. I was originally assigned a middle seat, and there were no other seats available.

Travelling to New Zealand is no picnic for us Europeans. For us, the country is at the end of the world and so even the fastest flight connection takes around 24 hours. It is all the more important on such a long journey not to arrive at your destination completely exhausted. Two long-haul flights with the flag carrier of the Kiwis were also part of the small round-the-world trip. Here are a few glimpses of their in-flight product. The focus point is the longest flight of the trip — with a flight time of around 14 hours from Auckland to Chicago.

The seat had hard sides and I fit but not comfortably, I also needed to ask for a seatbelt extender. I mentioned a little earlier in my review that there are two dedicated washrooms for use by passengers in the Premium Economy cabin. Seats have a 41" Just a minute later, a flight attendant spoke to us and explained that this was unfortunately not possible because breakfast would start in 15 minutes. I opted for the Chicken which turned out be a good choice and proved to be very popular on the flight. However, the tray table is very sturdy and completely flat, even though hinged in the middle. Download transcript. Steve Biddle From the day I flew on my first plane I was addicted to travel. You can also pre-order special meals when you book. Please note when on board the long haul services your experience may be different to what is shown in this panorama. Present on the seat was a pillow, blanket, water bottle, amenity kit and noise cancelling headphones. Good idea, but only 3 stars for its execution.

Impressions of the international Air New Zealand lounge in Auckland The moment when we were asked to go to the service desk in the lounge over the loudspeaker was a bit irritating. In Auckland, we only had about 30 minutes to visit the Koru Lounge before boarding our flight to San Francisco. When the flight attendant came by with a basket of fresh, warm bread, the meal was off to a good start. The Koru Lounge is certainly at the top of list and is a great benefit to anyone holding a Business Premium ticket, or a Koru Lounge membership. Theoretically, the fast track of the security check follows the premium check-in directly. Boarding started 35 minutes late, with no reason given. Eventually the blackened salmon with citrus labneh, saffron mash, edamame beans and steamed spinach turned up and was worth the wait as it was delicious. On Tokyo — Chicago, on the other hand, we were lucky: we caught one of the four Dreamliners, which are already equipped with WLAN antennas. Because the seats are angled, the shared table could easily be ignored if traveling alone and the the Spaceseat would still offer adequate privacy. The cushions on these seats were not as comfortable as the Spaceseat cushions, but still a step up from Economy Class. Up first was prosciutto with radicchio, asparagus, grilled artichokes and blue cheese.
