When MIT was founded in , most students lived locally and commuted from home. Together with eight other coeds at the mecca for Negro education, Hedgeman crafted a design that not only fostered interaction, stimulation, and ethical growth among members; but also provided hope for the masses. Ransom ' Hope felt that an effective group was needed through which Black women on predominantly White campuses could communicate and help each other. Through the years, Lambda Upsilon has been committed to sisterhood and service to all mankind. It has participated in community service in the Greater Boston and Cambridge community and has implemented programs on each of the national platforms. Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Forming a sorority broke barriers for African American women in areas where they had little power or authority due to a lack of opportunities for minorities and women in the early 20th century. The sorority is one of the nation's largest Greek-letter organizations, having had more than , members in 1, chapters in the United States and several other countries. Howard faculty member Ethel T. Robinson encouraged Hedgemon by relating her own observances of sorority life at the Women's College at Brown University. Robinson and other female students had not been able to participate in the existing sororities because of their race. To implement her idea, Hedgemon began recruiting interested classmates during the spring of She and the rest of the group used the summer of to research and explore options for their new organization. The women returned to Howard in the fall of to work on the creation of the sorority. Hedgemon and Marie Woolfolk gave a presentation to the administration to secure approval, which was granted immediately. The Beta chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity made its presence known on December 20, , but it was not actually given permission to exist at Howard until the spring of Informal sessions continued, with regular bi-weekly meetings beginning after the holiday.

Five years later, Nellie Quander and her gallant and visionary associates contributed the added dimension of an international organization and perpetual membership. If you are matriculating as a full-time student attending an accredited four-year college or university, membership is obtained through an undergraduate chapter. If you have a bachelor or advanced degree s from an accredited four-year college or university, membership is obtained through a graduate chapter. An active graduate chapter will extend an authorized and written membership letter of invitation upon approval of the official Membership Intake Process to prospective members. This administration has six initiatives. These initiatives are designed to improve the lives of those we serve. We will work collaboratively to maximize our outreach on progressive endeavors and consistently produce leaders who will advance our credo of service. AKA Soror Squads are focused on building greater bonds of sisterhood around common endeavors or activities through intimate small groups. AKA Pals will allow members to create cross-regional relationships to allow for greater fellowship.
