Jezebel is an infamous figure in the Bible who promoted the worship of the foreign idol, Baal, persecuted the Israelites who monotheistically believed in Yahweh, and is thought to have engaged in prostitution. Moreover, Jezebel functions as a siren since she lures her husband, King Ahab, away from worshipping Yahweh to revere Baal, epitomizing Jezebel and those who behave in the same nature as the downfall of society. For one, Jezebel is depicted in a religious text, which made it easier for white people to connect what they perceived when they first began encountering Black people since there was greater Christian fervor in the past than in the present. Before visits to Africa consisted of accumulating Africans to be sold into slavery, white Europeans documented African culture and wrongly judged it. They came across Africans wearing semi-nude clothing and interpreted it as Africans possessing an insane libido. This interpretation later served as the justification white slave owners utilized when they demanded sexual services a euphemism for rape from their Black slave women. Unfortunately, in doing so, the Jezebel trope for Black women evolved into Black women having a constant need for sex even though this narrative was falsely composed so white slave owners could justify their actions. The music industry is a glaring example of where the Jezebel trope has affected how Black women are stereotyped to conduct themselves. These expectations are most present in music videos. Black women often do not have control over their image and are rather directed to behave in certain manners: twerking, being sassy and loud, etc. Additionally, these manners are more reinforced for darker skinned Black women because American society is colorist. It upholds lighter skinned women over darker skinned women.
