He could even defeat Oars on his own and that alone makes this transformation extremely overpowered. Gear Third is one of the many Gears that Luffy has developed, thanks to his incredible mastery of his Devil Fruit. This gear sees Luffy inflate his bones by biting into his thumb directly. The inflation leads to his body becoming akin to that of a giant and the power that he generates with this Gear is absolutely immense. In fact, a single punch from Gear 3rd was strong enough to make Rob Lucci nearly lose consciousness. His control over this ability has improved drastically over time as he does not face any side effects anymore. Luffy is still extremely great at using Gear Third abilities, and he can even combine them with elemental powers, such as flame and even electricity.

Thanks to his powerful spirit, Luffy is able to withstand far more shadows than most people, ultimately resulting in the Straw Hat Pirate's unique Nightmare Luffy form. Even Charlotte Cracker, a pirate worth million berries, could not penetrate its defenses and was sent flying, being defeated in a single blow.
