Part of their philosophy was that humanity needed to get back to its more animalistic roots. It was a brilliant yet terrifying idea, and one that viewers likely expect would happen somewhere should a real apocalypse hit. However, being comfortable and safe isn't always the best thing for people in an apocalypse. Survivors couldn't really sneak up on the place and if they did, they'd have large walls and guards with weapons made at its blacksmith shop to contend with.
