This being "American Horror Story," we know what to expect as we near the end of a season: lots of kill-offs, a touch of torture, and quick tie-offs of existing storylines. Emma Halleen plays Shelby Brubaker, a high school teen who's struggling to get over the death of her mother. Disconnected from her peers and alienated from her father, she doesn't feel like she has any friends, and Halleen really sells Shelby's disconsolate and neglected melancholy. Given that Bestie is one of her very first roles, Halleen has all the makings of an up-and-coming Saoirse Rohan, particularly as she vacillates between morose and spiteful under Bestie's influence. Barden does an excellent job throughout Bestie's metamorphosis, starting off shy and kind, but eventually conveying more conviction as she exerts dominance over Shelby, until her true colors as a master manipulator and even murderer are finally revealed.
