Before YouTube, live streaming and nifty websites such as this one, there were really only two options if you wanted to learn to draw:. For those that chose the latter path, there was one author whose reputation stood out. His influence can be found in multiple generations of artists, including in-demand stars like Alex Ross and Steve Rude, who have named his techniques as instrumental in their art. Andrew Loomis was an illustrator and art instructor who found early success creating advertising material in the s and 30s. In a time when photography was scarce and expensive, artists were the bedrock of the advertising industry. It was during his time here that some of his techniques were first compiled into book form with Fun with a Pencil. As original copies became hard to find, lessons from the book floated around as piecemeal PDFs online. The contents are full duplicates of the originals, which has enabled a whole new generation to appreciate the books — without paying through the roof.

This book is a wonderful collection of drawings of the human body in the context of statics and dynamics! The text block has a few creases as well as some minor traces of wear and handling and a few annotations in ink throughout. Our BookSleuth is specially designed for you. Most of the Fine Art Instruction that i find online has been pretty much Andrew Loomis teachings rehashed. Slight wear to corners and edges; minor browning and dust soiling throughout; small closed tears at base of last end paper repaired with clear tape; otherwise tight, sound and unmarked in Good to Very Good. Profusely illustrated.

Published by Viking Press, New York. To that end, I would argue that this book is not necessarily for beginners, but be mindful I'm quite biased as to where one should start with art. An essential book for the artist! Liquid staining to text block edges. The chapters are all introduced with explanatory texts and the drawings themselves, with which the reader is encouraged to practice, are annotated. Hard cover. Other books by this author make for a solid foundation and may be useful before beginning this one, which is noted in the book. Susin, used for our drawing class in high school! If you've NEVER drawn before, never picked up a pencil, never created anything art related, this book isn't for you. Other things in this book are new and fantastic to study.
