He was the son of Zeus and his wife Hera who were the patriarch and matriarch of the Greek pantheon, a group of gods who resided on Mount Olympus in the Skyland. He was imprisoned in a pocket dimension on the secret island of Themyscira , accessible only through a tree on the island. The Amazons were given the eternal task of guarding their father's prison, ensuring that Ares would never again release his wrath on the Multiverse. The tree would only become visible to those whom Ares wished to see it. The gods would wipe the minds of anyone who would leave Themyscira because if no one had the knowledge to get there, then Phobos and Deimos wouldn't be able to free their father.

Not wishing to see his son slain at the hands of Hercules, Ares descended from Mount Olympus and engaged his half-brother in combat. With the aid of Athena, Hercules was able to wound the God of War, thus driving him from the battlefield and allowing Hercules to defeat and subsequently kill the son of Ares.

Ares would eventually instigate the War of the Gods , successfully killing almost all other Old Gods and wounding Zeus, but was ultimately defeated and grievously wounded by the King of the Gods and was unable to stop his father from fathering Wonder Woman and creating Themyscira, leaving him temporarily incapacitated and permanently much weaker but still succeeding in becoming unopposed in his quest to destroy humanity as Zeus died from the severe wounds Ares inflicted on him after creating Themyscira.
