The Australian RV industry has gone though a bit of a revolution over the past five to 10 years; slowly but surely, the traditional 'stick 'n tin' construction that has been with us for more than 50 years is being gradually replaced by composite construction caravans, campers and motorhomes. The old construction method was to build a usually Meranti timber frame or, in some cases, aluminium frame over a very solid steel chassis. Then the timber would usually have styrofoam insulation inserted between the framing sections, and the lot would be lined on the inside with plywood and finished off with corrugated aluminium sheet cladding on the outside. Then it was glued and screwed onto the timber frame or pop-riveted if aluminium and sealed with mastic or more recently silicone sealer. The new, composite structure has far less joins and is theoretically lighter, stronger and does not — in theory — require such a strong, heavy chassis to underpin it like a timber frame caravan does.

The Avan Aspire is available in a wide range of configurations, from the also available as a pop-top to the , the largest in the Aspire line-up. Over the years, the company has expanded and evolved its offering. Though that classic A-shaped camper remains one of its signature rigs, but not its best-seller. That honour goes to the Aspire range. Our review Aspire is the Hardtop. Fitted with the optional Allure interior package, with updates for that will be officially unveiled at Melbourne Leisurefest, it is a study in how far Avan has come. That interior finish remains available, of course, but the Allure design package considerably brightens things up. And while the layout is effective for two people, it is outdone by the contemporary interior design. The package now comes with enhanced facings for the cupboards and overhead lockers — the doors now cover the entire box of the cabinet behind. A suite of LEDs, including strip lighting and even a strategically placed light in the entryway grab handle, adds a new level of class. The rack will hold seven bottles of wine. Apparently, Avan customers have been telling the company to hurry up and build a dedicated spot for their happy hour drinks. It is, I admit, an elegant way to use the small section of the kitchen forward of the four-burner cooktop and griller. There really is a decent amount of kitchen storage, including a large drawer for pots and pans beneath the griller. Overall, the fit and finish in the kitchen is of a high standard, but a less intrusive trim between the benchtop and splashback would take it from very good to great.

Never again will I consider purchasing an Avan. I have had numerous issues with my Avan. The van is one of their newer models so all I can put it down to is lack of research and testing before manufacture. The stand out issue was the total lack of interest by their customer service department. It took three months of emails and phone calls to finally get some results. They even suggested that I deliver the van to their Melbourne manufacturing plant to get the repairs completed.

Pic 5 base area The left hand end is free to install a basin. Note also that the external wall has a window in it. While ply is light, cheap and allows for more varied and intricate interior wall colour options, if the ply is damaged or gets saturated it can be very time-consuming and difficult to remove and replace as it's glued to the composite core. Australian composite caravans, especially so-called off-road models, also have a stronger, heavier chassis than many Euro vans, again negating the theoretical weight advantages of composites. The window is now sporting a Remington cover for the occasions we want the window opened. Start A New Topic Reply. Every caravanner understands that accessing the storage space beneath the dinette seats is, at best, awkward and, at worst, downright frustrating. This shows the proposed new lay out. All my van plastic plumbing was purchased through Carac in Dandenong, not only because they have a great range but the fact is that I live 7 minutes away from them. The typical full composite structure has one-piece floor, side walls and roof sections with aluminium C-section joins holding the main structure together as well as silicone and screws. Then the timber would usually have styrofoam insulation inserted between the framing sections, and the lot would be lined on the inside with plywood and finished off with corrugated aluminium sheet cladding on the outside.

I think it all depends just how good the dealer is, I know from a number of sources that my local A van dealer is not much chop, so if looking for a van would not be going there. The Allure design touches are on show here, too. The payload capacity of kg is standard fare for a tandem-axle van. The composite sandwich panels we see in Aussie caravans, campers and motorhomes can be up to 40mm thick, although slightly thinner and therefore lighter panels are used on many British and European vans due to smaller tow vehicles used and limited off-road use. I now have to note that I cannot accept ownership, truth, quality, or veracity, of articles I may quote off the internet. I will add to the conversation, we have 12 mth old Retreat, we too have just had some warranty work completed, I thought buying a new Van I would be trouble free, not so.
