A barbarian is proficient with all simple and martial weapons , light armor, medium armor, and shields except tower shields. This benefit applies only when he is wearing no armor, light armor, or medium armor and not carrying a heavy load. Barbarians are the only characters who do not automatically know how to read and write. A barbarian may spend 2 skill points to gain the ability to read and write all languages he is able to speak. A barbarian who gains a level in any other class automatically gains literacy.

From the frozen wastes of the north and the hellish jungles of the south come brave, even reckless, warriors. Civilized people call them barbarians or berserkers and suspect them of mayhem, impiety, and atrocities. These "barbarians," however, have proven their mettle and their value to those who would be their allies. To enemies who underestimated them, they have proved their cunning, resourcefulness, persistence, and mercilessness. Adventuring is the best chance barbarians have of finding a place in a civilized society.
For our next step into the Deep Dive series, we are going to take a break from the spells and move into the realm of character classes. The best place to start is the Barbarian, which, in our opinion Chris' opinion , started off as the most overpowered class, and has continued that tradition up to and including 5e. As they progressed through the editions, the class quickly became a fan favorite in the Fighter class replacing the Paladin, who, while they got spells, does a great deal less damage than the Barbarian. Some of the more important key stats for the Barbarian class by edition are listed below. Please note that some of the editions have a ridiculous amount of information on the Barbarian class - looking at you 2e - so we are only hitting on some of the information we felt was most important. Apply this bonus before modifying the barbarian's speed because of any load carried or armor worn. For example, a human barbarian has a speed of 40 feet, rather than 30 feet, when wearing light or no armor. When wearing medium armor or carrying a medium load, his speed drops to 30 feet. A halfling barbarian has a speed of 30 feet, rather than 20 feet, in light or no armor. When wearing medium armor or carrying a medium load, his speed drops to 20 feet. Illiteracy: Barbarians are the only characters who do not automatically know how to read and write. A barbarian may spend 2 skill points to gain the ability to read and write all languages he is able to speak.

If the barbarian would later gain improved uncanny dodge as a barbarian class feature, he gains uncanny dodge instead. Wot a lot of mukkin' about if yer asks me. Besides, you get to be a descendant of Giants! Reflex save DC is equal to your damage. Improved Uncanny Dodge: You still stick it to Rogues, except worse since this only counts your Deepwarden class level. A character with 4 or more levels of Barbarian gains this ability even if multiclassed. While Raging, a Barbarian may not cast spells, activate magic items, use spell-like abilities, or drop his weapons or shield. The best summary of this board I've seen so far:. Benefit : When you select this ability, your connection to your spiritual totem intensifies. Skin of Stone Ex : A goliath barbarian who takes the 7th-level racial substitution level gains the ability to shrug off some amount of injury from most attacks.

Although more than 8 levels is probably a waste. It's secondary, but it's still an extra attack so it's all good. Your physique reaches a new level, and you gain global bonuses to physical stats and armor. The interesting stuff comes from the terrain masteries. You get Con to AC over Dex! Never really big enough to help, but allows you to smack that sneaky thief who forgot to buy Lords of Madness for his idiocy or should I say, his madness? You can invest essential into your Rage to get melee damage- and Will-save bonus for the Rage! As a bonus though, Charisma-focused Champion makes for a mighty intimidator too. It trips, disarms, deals two-handed reach damage, threatens adjacent and just has the whole damn packet. The penalty to AC remains at A barbarian dedicated to the horse totem does not gain the standard uncanny dodge, trap sense, and improved uncanny dodge barbarian class features, and instead gains the following abilities.
