The league sits at level 5 on the Scottish football league system , acting as a feeder to the Scottish Professional Football League , and is above three regional leagues at level 6. Founded in , it is currently composed of 18 member clubs in a single division. Geographically, the league covers an area south of Dundee in the Lowlands area of Scotland. Since —15, it has featured in the senior pyramid system. The winners take part in an end of season promotion play-off with the Highland Football League champions, with the winners then competing against the bottom club in Scottish League Two for a place in the SPFL.

Hearts and other top-flight clubs hope to be considered alongside Rangers and Celtic for the chance to field a B team in next season's Lowland League. Lowland League clubs voted to allow 'guest clubs' to participate again. Rangers and Celtic B teams competed this season but could not be promoted. The Old Firm have suggested they would like to participate for a second season and, if others also sought entry, Lowland League clubs would have to decide which two teams to allow access. Lowland League rules allow only 18 teams to participate, with 16 regular clubs and two 'guest' teams making up the maximum number. The criteria for clubs for next season has yet to be confirmed. The Lowland League's annual meeting is scheduled to take place towards the end of May, by which time all clubs intimating an interest in entering B teams will have been established.

The Scottish Lowland Football League can confirm that the majority of our members have voted in favour of continuing with B Teams for at least the next 2 seasons. Following a process which began in October, a democratic vote was held in line with our rules at a General Meeting tonight. Inverness Caledonian Thistle currently sit in 7th place of the Scottish Championship with 13 points from their 12 games played. The Second Round would see The Big T blow fellow Lowland League side, East Kilbride out of the competition with a win — made more impressive by the fact that The Kilby are undefeated in their league campaign, with 15 games played.
