Linear algebra is ostensibly the mathematics used to solve linear equations, but in practice it is the generalization of basic algebra to multi-dimensional objects. Since multivariate objects are of great importance in data science, linear algebra is an essential tool for any data scientist. Many find linear algebra a dull subject, but proficiency is required for more advanced topics. So, even if you can't find beauty in linear algebra, know that the effort you put into mastering it will be rewarded in other data science disciplines. Plus, there are solutions available on the book's website. Strang's book is also associated with a set of video lectures and other supplementary material available here. The applications chapter is excellent. It includes: graphs and networks, linear programming, Fourier series, computer graphics, cryptography, and more.

I don't see the link either, but I also do recall him releasing it for free. I work in that area : The skills needed will vary a lot.

Hello all, the title really says it all. Hoping to find a linear algebra book that is friendly for visual learners. EDIT: thank you all for the great responses! I enjoyed Linear Algebra Done Wrong [0], to be used in combination with a more traditional textbook, like Linear Algebra and its Applications [1] which has some good diagrams. I've already seen it mentioned, but I'd like to add that 3b1b's Essence of Linear Algebra [2] videos are well made and make for a good supplementary resource early on. This video standard describes a system for encoding and decoding a "Codec" that engineers have defined for applications like High Definition TV. It is not expected that you will know the meaning of every word -- your book author does not know either. The point is to see an important example of a "standard" that is created by an industry after years of development so all companies will know what coding system their products must be consistent with. The words "motion compensation" refer to a way to estimate each video image from the previous one. The simplest would be to guess that successive video images are the same.
