Akihito Kanbara is a high school student who apparently has a Youmu lineage and a peculiar regenerative ability that exceeds that of a normal human's.

Beyond the Boundary is a supernatural Japanese anime series based on the light novels written by Nagomu Torii and illustrated by Chise Kamoi. However Mirai stabs Akihito with a sword made of her own blood and discovers that Akihito is an immortal "half-youmu"—the offspring of a supernatural creature called a youmu and a human. After learning that Mirai is a Spirit World Warrior and lacks the confidence to slay youmu, the two form an unlikely pair when Akihito decides to help her regain her confidence to kill youmu so that she may stop attempting to kill him as practice. The twelve episode anime was produced by Kyoto Animation , directed by Taichi Ishidate and written by Jukki Hanada , with character designs by Miku Kadowaki, art direction by Mikiko Watanabe, sound direction by Yota Tsuruoka and soundtrack music by Hikaru Nanase. An original net animation titled Beyond the Boundary Idol Trial! Akihito and Mirai flee from Sakura's onslaught down the illusionary labyrinth created by the Hollow Shadow. Arriving at a twisted replication of the train yard, Mirai becomes ensnared by the Shadow as it mimics Yui's likeness, however Akihito snaps Mirai back to reality before the Shadow kills her.

Mirai Kuriyama is the sole survivor of a clan of Spirit World warriors with the power to employ their blood as weapons. As such, Mirai is tasked with hunting down and killing "youmu"—creatures said to be the manifestation of negative human emotions. One day, while deep in thought on the school roof, Mirai comes across Akihito Kanbara, a rare half-breed of youmu in human form. In a panicked state, she plunges her blood saber into him only to realize that he's an immortal being. From then on, the two form an impromptu friendship that revolves around Mirai constantly trying to kill Akihito, in an effort to boost her own wavering confidence as a Spirit World warrior. Eventually, Akihito also manages to convince her to join the Literary Club, which houses two other powerful Spirit World warriors, Hiroomi and Mitsuki Nase. As the group's bond strengthens, however, so does the tenacity of the youmu around them.
