Blackberry flashing red light

Hi, every so often, I hear a notification tone on my phone and the red light blinks, I check my sms, mms, email and there is no new messages. The only way I can get the light constantly flashing is a battery pull. Someone might know what causes this, and why I have to remove the battery to get the light to stop flashing? Thanks in advance. I think I know why this is happening now.
