Reply Chat Boards. Theatre Board is currently the only chat board I use to discuss theatre, and I'm pretty happy and satisfied with that as it's completely brilliant. This means that, obviously, I'm not a member of the BroadwayWorld chat board - and I know many on this board are. I'm not sure whether people have heard about this, but actress Patti Murin who was due to be in Broadway musical 'Nerds' that was pulled at the last minute as financing fell through has "taken on the chat boards" - specifically BroadwayWorld - campaigning against the negativity and snarky comments on there. Her blog post is a pretty interesting read, as are some of the comments left below it, and I'd be interested to know what people's thoughts on it are, as this board can get heated but it's still a lovely place to be and, as I said, I'm not a member of the BroadwayWorld chat board, but I sometimes feel that the same can't be said over there. I'm afraid I have no idea who Patti Murin is, but this blog post makes her sound terribly unprofessional. Cardinal Pirelli Member.

The simple thought of the theatre chat boards like BroadwayWorld or TheatreBoard is enough to send writers, directors, performers and producers running screaming into the night. If producers had magic powers, they would make these boards vanish, but why, why do they have such a bad rap? I have been a member of the Broadway World chat board for well over a decade, I have seen everything you can see from smartly written reviews, bitching and fighting, gossiping and paid shills more on that later. Over the years my mind has flipped back and forth on the idea of these message boards, are they simply a way for theatre fans to express and share opinions, or do they do more harm to the industry than good? Here is the thing though, with all the drama that can happen on these boards, they also contain members who I think offer a valuable contribution to the art form, ones who give smart critiques of shows, often far better reviews than the critics themselves. Oh, and that message board member who thought my play sucked, well he was right, it did. These outlets allow theatre fans to connect from around the world, share casting gossip, backstage stories, news from workshops of upcoming shows and more, it can be a fun place for a theatre nerd like myself. However, one of the things the message boards are most notorious for are reviews from the paying public, starting straight away with the first preview performance, and the industry HATES these. However, that does not and should not apply to message boards where members will review the show from the first preview onwards. You see, many years ago, when a new show was in previews the tickets used to be discounted, after all, you are not seeing the final locked show, you are seeing something that is still in a state of flux, you are essentially a test audience, and producers would be far clearer in their marketing when a show was in previews. Producers and creatives might hate that their work gets judged early, but this is a reality that the theatre industry not only needs to accept but embrace.
Many of these posters are mean to us, and they are broadwayworld message board as mean to each other. What sometimes fills me with dread is getting to a stage where I am fortunate enough to be working in shows more consistently, either well known ones or fringe, broadwayworld message board, but being attacked personally or those I love attacked over personal attributes just because I chose a career that is on a stage. How lucky we are to be alive right now to decide between seeing Disaster or Nerds on Broadway.
Warning: The following blog post is going to make me either incredibly popular in the theatre community or incredibly unpopular in the theatre community. And so on and so forth, until I found myself in a career where it legit revolves around what other people think. Am I good enough, am I pretty enough, am I friendly enough, etc. We get reviews written about us, which other people are allowed to, and overwhelmingly encouraged to, read when they are delivered to their inbox or front doorstep. Hundreds, sometimes thousands of people pay cash money to come sit in a dark room and watch us work. This is what we do and we love it.

Some highlights:. An electronic equivalent to what is little more than middle schooler nonsense discredits BWW and makes it look amateurish. The culture of the Internet changes with time, and so did the board. Who Leads? While I know there are some things that end up on eBay, for me personally, my autographed playbills rank with my diplomas in terms of prized possessions. But said guy has not seen a single moment, script page, or photograph from the current production. Obviously Patti had has a lot of stuff to say about BWW for years even though the term is generally not "chat board" and got it off her chest immediately after losing her job in a sudden way. I don't think that a blog post demanding love, adoration and unicorns, followed by some snark about stoopid posters is the best way to deal with snarky "chat boards". I hate the boards too, but I had a knee-jerk reaction.
