In many ways what transpired on March 6, was the worst fears of the New South Wales Rugby League powerbrokers realised right before their very eyes. For decades debate had raged over the strength of the Brisbane competition in comparison to the richer NSWRL and here was a team — albeit bursting with Origin representatives — coming together and in their first game making the defending premiers look second-rate. The Broncos took a lead into the halftime break and despite concerns about physically being up to the standard of established clubs in the NSWRL ran riot in the second half. On their way to the title the Sea Eagles had conceded more than 30 points in a game just once; the Broncos piled on 30 in the second half alone.

The history of the Brisbane Broncos Rugby League Football Club stretches back from their inception in the mids to the present day. They were introduced to the NSWRL 's Winfield Cup premiership in , taking the competition by storm in winning their first six games. The Broncos participated in 18 consecutive finals series from —, winning premierships six times, including the and NSWRL premierships, the Superleague premiership in and then the , and National Rugby League premierships. Whilst Brisbane had had its own rugby league club competition since , Brisbane teams had been assembled occasionally, usually referred to as Combined Brisbane for Bulimba Cup tournaments and representative matches against Sydney-based sides and touring international teams. By the s, the New South Wales Rugby Football League premiership decided they wanted to expand outside their traditional Sydney base. This began in with the introduction of the Canberra Raiders and the Illawarra Steelers. A proposal was made to the Queensland Rugby League to enter a Brisbane team in , but it was voted down. After deliberating over such names as Bulls, Brumbies, Bombers and Kookaburras, the club eventually decided on the name Broncos.
