Made in Edinburgh and first awarded in , it has endured years of wear and tear from being passed among players of winning teams. In , it was accidently left outside in the square in Portree, Skye, before being taken into the care of police. Shinty's governing body, the Camanachd Association, has received funding from the competition's sponsors Tulloch Homes for the replica. Five-times cup winner Gary Innes said the historical value of the cup was significant. He said: "It's done its rounds bless it. We've been fortunate to have had the days to hold it and party with it.

In , the trophy made its way to New York City for the Tartan Day celebrations, the first time it had ever left Scotland. Celebrations of victorious teams have left the trophy in a fragile state. For example, it was left and then found in Somerled Square, Portree , after Skye Camanachd 's victory, as everybody had assumed somebody else was looking after it. So the board of directors at the Camanachd Association decided to have the trophy renovated and a replica made for presentation after finals.

As travel in those pre-A9 days was a lengthy and expensive commitment, and it could easily take days to make a return journey to the opposing side, the Association had decided that the best way to arrange the competition was for it to be split into four districts, to help the competing teams to keep costs down. The leaders in each district would then play each other in the final rounds.
Kinlochshiel will take the Camanachd Cup home for the first time. A hat-trick from captain Keith MacRae at Mossfield Park lit up the contest in what will go down as a famous victory. A rousing final saw Lovat get back into the game on half-time following MacRae's opener with an equaliser from Greg Matheson. But the Shiel skipper completed the job for the Balmacara side. A sparkling first half burst into life when Matheson missed out on a golden chance for Lovat and Fraser Heath hit the post at the other end, having beaten keeper Josh Grant. Play surged from end to end and after 24 minutes. MacRae was fed from a poorly executed Lovat hit in and smashed the ball past Stuart MacDonald for the opener. But into stoppage time before the break, Matheson atoned for earlier misses and cashed in on poor defending to grab a vital equaliser. This seemed to revive Lovat who started a more physical second half the stronger, but the next goal was Shiels' on the hour when MacRae dashed in on a long ball from Jordan Fraser and prodded it home between keeper and defender. There was very nearly a freak equaliser when Heath, hurling style, flicked up the ball and volleyed it from from inside his own half, and his effort was just scrambled away.
