Lazlo is often at odds with his pessimistic camp leader, Scoutmaster Lumpus, but usually gets along well with the second-in-command, Slinkman, and other campers. Camp Kidney sits just across the lake from Acorn Flats, which is home to the campsite of the all-female Squirrel Scouts which function somewhat similarly to the Girl Scouts. Camp Lazlo was produced by Cartoon Network Studios. Its style of humor is similar to the Nickelodeon series Rocko's Modern Life , which Murray also created and worked on. The final episode aired on March 27, Spin-off media include DVDs, restaurant promotions, a video game, and digital download releases. The series is set in a universe inhabited solely by anthropomorphic animals of many species and focuses on a trio of campers attending a poorly run summer camp known as Camp Kidney. There's also a rival summer camp called Acorn Flats, which is attended solely by girls, primarily focusing on Lazlo, Raj, and Clam's respective female counterparts attending that camp; Patsy the adventurous mongoose who has a major crush on Lazlo, Gretchen the short-tempered alligator , Nurse Leslie the pink nurse shark who is a doctor and Nina the bookish, sci-fi -loving giraffe , along with the object of Scoutmaster Lumpus's affections, Miss Doe a female deer , the head of Acorn Flats. Murray said that, as he did in Rocko's Modern Life , he matched the personalities of characters to various animals. Some episodes may involve the Bean Scouts' attempts at unveiling the truth behind camp legends or clowning around, infuriating their peers or placing themselves in a variety of odd situations commonly based around traditional or fictionalized, bizarre camp activities.

Ultimately, Murray wanted to create a place where nature prevails, and the hustle and bustle of real-life is left behind, with no technology to distract from the impressions of camp life.

After being in space for 20 years, Rocko and his friends attempt to conform to an even more modern life in O-Town, where coffee shops are on every corner, food trucks offer multi-layered tacos, touch-screen O-Phones are being upgraded on a near-constant basis, an instant-print kiosk has replaced Rocko's old job at Kind-of-a-Lot-O-Comics, and radioactive energy drinks turn their consumers into mutants. The series boasted a crew of creative talent that included many well-known names in TV animation, including Murray, who went on to create Camp Lazlo! When I developed a show about modern life, I wanted an everyman who deals with life in a very satirical and caricatured way… the eye of the hurricane where everything is going on around him. Best friend with Rocko and Filburt, Heffer was raised by wolves in O-Town, as seen by his family name, who originally were going to eat him, and thus began to fatten him up. Eventually, the family grew to love Heffer, so they instead raised him like a son, not letting him know that he was adopted until Rocko accidentally revealed the truth when the Wolfe family invited him for dinner. The mark which Heffer believed to be a "birthmark" on his butt is actually the plotting lines showing where the wolves were going to divide him. Heffer is mostly colored yellow with an orange snout.
