A vampire and a sorcerer , he is the main antagonist of the series, the archenemy of the Belmont clan, and the final boss of almost every installment. In the series reboot Castlevania: Lords of Shadow , Dracula is reimagined as an 11th-century holy knight named Gabriel Belmont and serves as the central character of the game and its two sequels. The Lords of Shadow series tells the story of Gabriel's quest to save the world, fall into darkness, and journey of redemption. The Castlevania Dracula draws some history from both, but instead of only preying on maidens, this version threatens whole realms with his armies at the least, and at worst is presented as the very embodiment of evil. Nevertheless, further games explore a sign of humanity in the form of his love towards his wife who had a child named Alucard with him. Dracula was created by game director Hitoshi Akamatsu who was fond of horror films when creating the Castlevania franchise.

It has been released on various platforms, from early systems to modern consoles, as well as handheld devices such as mobile phones. Castlevania is largely set in the eponymous castle of Count Dracula , the main antagonist of the Belmont clan of vampire hunters. A reboot of the franchise launched with Castlevania: Lords of Shadow in , a multi-platform 3D action title developed by MercurySteam and co-produced by Hideo Kojima. In , rumours began circulating that, following internal restructuring at Konami to refocus on PC and console games, a new main entry in the series was in development. Castlevania has spawned numerous spin-offs, the first being the platformer, Kid Dracula for the Famicom , a parody which stars the eponymous character.

He had a dislike of humanity, and a reputation for sheer brutality. He was known to impale his victims and slaughter entire villages should they wrong him. By the late medieval period of Europe in Wallachia , Dracula had lived alone in a castle , which could be magically teleported. He had also come to possess a vast wealth of scientific knowledge, which was stored away within the depths of the castle. To deter visitors or robbers from entering, Dracula had the impaled corpses of his victims displayed at the front of the castle grounds. A warning that promised a brutal and painful death to those willing to ignore it.

Based on the Japanese video game series of the same name by Konami , the first two seasons adapt the entry Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse and follow Trevor Belmont , Alucard and Sypha Belnades as they defend the nation of Wallachia from Dracula and his minions. Additionally, characters and elements from the entry Castlevania: Curse of Darkness are featured beginning in the second season, and Alucard's backstory is drawn from the entry Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. The art style is heavily influenced by Japanese animation and Ayami Kojima 's artwork. Castlevania was originally planned as a film, developed by producer Kevin Kolde and his company Project He joined Frederator Studios in , and founder Fred Seibert agreed to produce the project there. They contracted a script with writer Warren Ellis in The project entered development hell until about , and it was picked up by streaming service Netflix.
