General Motors introduced the front-wheel drive GM platform in with the introductions of two subcompacts , the Opel Corsa A and the Vauxhall Nova. It was originally known as the S-car. The platform was still in use until by Chevrolet 's Latin American branch for their entry-level models. This platform became very popular in Mexico in , when the model renamed Chevy Swing 4 door and Chevy Joy 2 door was imported from Spain. In , the models were built in Mexico and several variants were offered: a 4-door sedan called Monza , a 2- and a 4-door hatchback, a pickup truck, and a station wagon imported from Chile.

The C2 generation of Chevrolet Corvette was built between and for the model years of through It was the second generation of Corvette and was popularly known as the Corvette Sting Ray. The C2 naturally evolved from the previous C1 generation. The Corvette -- the final year of the C1 generation -- offered a more appealing physical appearance as well as sharper handling and more horsepower than the rest of the first-gen models. Many of these design elements from the rear of the car naturally evolved into the C2's look. Like the last year of the C1, the new Corvette C2 featured a long nose, a compact cabin and a short back end with peaked fenders. The general shape of the car was the same. However, there were some marked differences as well. The most prominent change was the appearance of the front end. The new C2 now featured folding pop-up lights whereas the C1 had four round headlights.

The arrival of the Chevy Corvette brought with it the official announcement that, as far as factory production of the C5 was concerned, this would be the final year for the fifth generation model. Despite the growing rumors that an all-new Corvette was on the way, it had been decided that Chevrolet would continue to produce the Corvette so as not to leave a production gap as they had in while ramping up production of a next generation C6 Corvette. Just the same, it was also decided that no notable changes should be made to the C5, save for the introduction of a couple new paint colors — namely Magnetic Red II, which as a re-formulated variant of the Magnetic Red originally used on the thru models and Arctic White, which had been featured previously on the to models. However, General Motors, looking to commemorate the spectacular accomplishments that had been achieved by the C5 Corvette both on and off the race track during its eight year production run, also decided to introduce a special Commemorative Edition Corvette for its final model year. The Commemorative Edition Corvette was specifically designed to pay homage to Corvette's successful return to racing. All the Commemorative Edition Corvettes were finished in a striking LeMans Blue paint with red-edged silver stripes that adorned the hood, roof and rear deck lid.
