The Hydroelectric Dam is perhaps the most frustrating building to build because of the various factors that go into placing it properly. Once you do, you may have a hard time actually getting it to work properly, as I did. The most common are:. The primary thing you need to take into consideration when building a dam is the possibility of flooding when placing your dam. This power station will raise the water level on the side the water flow comes from. This will cause water to leak around the edges of the dam eventually. I recommend either terraforming a path to lead the water to the dam or building cliffs along the edge of the river behind the dam. Use the Shift Terrain tool to elevate the ground at least a couple of dozen meters high. However, I only had to do it on one side here since the terrain on the other side was already high enough. Luckily, the higher elevation on the starting side helps with this issue, as well, since it puts distance between the starting side and the shoreline and water. Finally, you need to choose a wider river for your Hydroelectric Dam. But you can use the Terrain Tools to make a river wider if needed. Then, build a road to one of its ends and connect it to your power grid with Power Lines. At that point, you should be getting energy from the dam properly.

The hydro power plant is a power-generating structure capable of generating between zero to 1, megawatts. The hydro power plant must be built over a river with each end point connecting to some form of land. It is unlocked by meeting the Small City milestone. Flowing water is an infinite source of kinetic power. Find a strong current in a river and build a dam to access this source of clean electricity.

The power output of the hydro power plant is determined by the potential energy of the water above and below the dam. Larger differences mean greater power output.

Unlike some other city-building games that allow for outside connections, the population centers in Cities: Skylines have to be completely self-sufficient. This means that players have to build all their own power plants and other energy sources. Renewable energy is a good way to get this power. Wind turbines and solar power plants don't create as many megawatts as a coal or oil plant at least not consistently , but they also don't pollute their surroundings. Another renewable option in Cities: Skylines is the hydroelectric dam, but to get the most from a dam players will need to find the best spot to build it. The first thing players need to do is reach the Small City milestone. This will unlock the dam option in the electricity section of the build menu. Once it's available, select the dam and then choose a point on a shoreline that's high above the water level. Stretch the dam to a point at the same height on the opposite shore, and the game will automatically create a dam that arches towards the water source. Players can also see the expected megawatt output the dam will create, but be aware that this may not be the real result.

And all I want is a working hydro power plant. I made a canyon map where i can easily build powerfull dams Originally posted by grapplehoeker :. Image posted on Reddit by user Linkery. That did cost about the same and also saved a lot of energy. I check the currents, and the currents around the dam stopped. Abby Smith Abby Smith Mar 15, Every time I placed a dam in one of my simulations, it triggered a tidal wave. I even tried increasing the water level from the source, which works. I don't know what it didn't work, so I load up my savegame and try it again, placing the dam slightly different, more centered of the river. My people are screaming for new zones, I still have to create that railway and see how that city highway I built works out.

I sympathise with you and I understand how difficult mastering dam building can be. Cuz right now nothing is happening. The primary thing you need to take into consideration when building a dam is the possibility of flooding when placing your dam. If you plop it on a lake, you could have just snorted the cash. And that covers how to make Hydroelectric Dams work in Cities Skylines 2. The big thing to remember when building a Hydro Plant is that the effect is not immediate. Zefnoly View Profile View Posts.
