Nejen vyspělé a bohaté státy jsou v celosvětovém měřítku konfrontovány s realitou postupného stárnutí. Tento proces byl v minulosti nastartován především dynamickým rozvojem medicíny a kontinuálním zvyšováním životního standardu, kteréžto faktory ve svém důsledku vedly k postupnému prodlužování délky lidského života na jedné straně a neúprosně klesající porodnosti na straně druhé. Poprvé v dějinách lidé v postproduktivním věku v populaci početně převýší případně již převýšili skupinu dětí a mladistvých. Tento faktor představuje náročnou výzvu pro společnost jako celek. A ačkoli byla stáří jako životní etapě věnována v průběhu vývoje moderní společnosti věnována vždy mimořádná pozornost a různé kontexty tohoto fenoménu byly nahlíženy z perspektivy filozofie, medicíny, sociologie, psychologie, ekonomie, gerontologie, gerontagogiky nebo sociální práce, současná situace staví tyto disciplíny před dosud neznámý problém. Dle řady odborníků hrozí socioekonomický a generační kolaps společnosti, přičemž možnosti řešení daného stavu nejsou jednoznačně intendovány. Mezi nejvíce dotčené země patří dle analýz OSN především Japonsko, Německo, Itálie a Finsko, vysoce ohrožené jsou však i regiony střední a východní Evropy. Studie WHO pak konstatují, že nejvíce přibývá obyvatel starších 60 let v rozvojových zemích. Jedná se tedy o skutečně celosvětový problém, který, ač jeho dopady budou mít primárně lokální charakter, má ve skutečnosti globální přesah.

Words of Tohkaku Wada : medical heritage in Japan. PubMed Central. The origins of Japan's medical ideas, which are deeply rooted in its religion, culture and history, are not widely understood in medical societies of other countries. We have taken up the task of summarising this tradition here so that some insight can be gained into the unique issues that characterise the practice of medicine in Japan.
