Heroes that history has forgotten….

After the German conquest of France in the second world war, the Free French army drummed up recruits from its African colonies to bolster its comeback. North African troops had fought for France as far back as the Crimean war, and west Africans from the first world war. The film's characters are fictional, but plausible. Whereas its English-language title, Days of Glory, though also taken from the Marseillaise, sounds like a cross between a Tom Cruise movie and a Bon Jovi song. Thus not so clever. After serving as cannon fodder during the Italian campaign, the surviving troops sail for Provence.

Sign In. Days of Glory Hide Spoilers. I was happy to see this film. However, this one is about men from the French colony of Algeria--folks you seldom ever hear about and I am sure many people from my country had no idea these folks fought for the Allies. In fact, now that I think about it, the only film where I can remember North African troops was "Two Women" and the Moroccan soldiers who raped the two ladies in the film! So, fortunately, these brave men get their due in "Days of Glory". These four volunteered to free their mother country in However, they soon saw that they weren't quite regular soldiers. Instead of receiving accolades or rank for their efforts, the men noticed that the white Christian French soldiers received these honors and the job of these Algerians was to shut up and die. Other examples of prejudice against these men were shown throughout the film as well as many incidents where they proved themselves in action. While I am thrilled that the men in this film finally get their due, I only give the film a 7. This means the film is good and worth seeing, but it had room for improvement.

The film, the Algerian nominee for the best foreign-language film Oscar and the winner of a special acting ensemble award at the Cannes Film Festival, follows a group of indigenes from Algeria to Morocco, through Italy to Provence, and finally to a village in Alsace, where they station themselves in anticipation of joining the invading Allied troops. These men consider themselves French citizens, but the French military treats them as second-class soldiers, denying them equipment, promotions, even tomatoes with their rations. Officers exploit their fervent patriotism, making promises they have no intention of keeping, to motivate the "wogs" to fight and die for the "fatherland" that treats them like bastard children. As is customary for this kind of genre picture, the main characters are not much more than types, but the actors are splendid at fleshing them out. Said popular French comedian and sitcom star Jamel Debbouze leaves his impoverished life to enlist in the Army, becoming a personal assistant or man-servant to Sgt. Martinez Bernard Blancan. He's a small, quiet man, a poor illiterate peasant as rough as the perpetually heavy black stubble on his face. Loyal to his sergeant, the only person of stature and authority who has ever taken notice of him, Said is outwardly humble but has a fierce temper when his dignity is insulted. As he proudly recounts his battlefield exploits to a young Frenchwoman, Said's tale of heroism climaxes in a passionately declaration: "I free a country and it's my country. This is a touching portrayal of a group of African soldiers and their regiment serving in the French army during WWII that's at its best when it's portraying the horrors of war and the inequities these soldiers faced when promised equity over and over again. The soldiers portrayed fought in the less well-known campaigns in Italy, the Rhone and Vosges-Alsace during More to explore. The North African troops, including their French leaders, are looked down upon by the native French troops. For the most part doggedly loyal and always good fighters and brave, the principals all meet with prejudice from their white French superiors, failing to receive recognition or promotion after each exploit. There were gruesome parts but true to any movie of war. The story focuses on four of these Algerian soldiers who leave their homeland to fight for the ideals of France yet are victims of discrimination and inequality of treatment and advancement, even when they are selected to perform the most hazardous of duties. Distant Finale : A "60 Years Later" epilogue shows an elderly Abdelkader visiting a graveyard in Alsace and praying before the graves of his dead companions, before going back to a tiny little apartment somewhere. Bored and disillusioned, most leave the tent and hold a meeting outside decrying the injustice.

Somehow along the way, someone else, by colour, creed, or connections, get all the recognition that you're due credit for. Among the Algerians joining up are Said, an illiterate goat herder; Messaoud, who wants to move to France and assimilate; and Abdelkader, a politically-aware type who thinks that participation in the war against Germany will help Algerians gain equal treatment and political rights within The French Colonial Empire. Think Call of Duty plugged into the silver screen, with epileptic zooming, fast-paced action, gory reality, humming rocket launchers and one massive sense of immediate danger. The lack of payment of pension plan to the survivors and families by the French government is another example of the level of intolerance and lack of respect in the world of the present days. Instead, we have scenes in which the disability is awkwardly ignored such as when he doesn't salute an officer while everyone else is and when he tosses away the rifle he's been carrying to engage in combat with an ineffectual handgun. For the first time this year the Weinstein Company has made something bearable --Hell, actually something good. The one thing that jumped out and grabbed me, striking me as below average, was the hammy and inexcusably hackneyed score. It has power and it is evident that it uses it wisely and vigorously. See 'Days of Glory' for the rarely told historical story of cultural despicability that occurred during WWII but don't anticipate anything close to seeing a 'great film'.
