He has explained in both prose and poetry why he writes. Lewis has remained a profound influence in Piper's life, in large measure, Piper says, because of the "combination of rational precision with language, and profound poetic perception of reality. Before those three weeks were over, I had resolved to drop organic chemistry… That was, I believe, my call to the ministry of the word. For 25 years, pastor John Piper has been provoking Christians with the simple but paradigm-shattering truth that "God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in him. The pursuit of pleasure in God is not only permissible; it's essential. Building his message on hundreds of Scriptures, especially from the Psalms, the apostle Paul, and Jesus himself--and echoing the likes of Blaise Pascal, Jonathan Edwards, and C. Lewis--Piper beckons us to approach God with the hedonist's abandon. Finally, we are freed to enjoy Jesus not only as our Lord and Savior, but also our all-surpassing, soul-satisfying Treasure.

I hoped this would be the case. ISSN Am I saying that God IS joyless and dismal and has n0 delight? Hedonism is pleasure of the self, you cannot simply sneak God into it by saying that you are pleasing yourself 'in God'. I like Piper's overall point, but I'm not sure this book needed to be quite so long. I don't think Piper's wrong in his choice of label, nor do I think the idea itself is theologically questionable. Of course we are! In this paradigm-shattering classic, newly revised and expanded, John Piper reveals that the debate between duty and delight doesn't truly Delight is our duty. Again, I agree. This book was disappointing on so many levels. That seeking after the feeling of joy and pleasure was the end all and be all of Christianity. Piper's refrain by the end of the book is that Christian hedonism finds its fountain of joy in God and overflows in love for neighbor. This tangential character of the pursuit of joy in God comes through in subsequent chapters where Piper tries to situate Christian hedonism in a variety of spheres: worship, service, money, marriage, missions, suffering.
