It was indeed an interesting time for Dodge and Plymouth lovers of that era. Chrysler started with a dodge volare sheet of paper.
After the model year, the Valiant and Dart models were discontinued. This was done to improve fuel economy through reduced wind drag, improve crosswind stability, reduce wind noise, and increase interior ventilation performance. These models helped to reveal stress points in the design phase before any sheet metal was formed. In addition, a reduced number of steel stampings offered better sheet metal panel fits with fewer welds needed. For the new models, the Chrysler Corporation introduced the Isolated Transverse Suspension System; this new front suspension system used torsion bars that crossed and were mounted transversely beneath the engine, a noticeable change from the longitudinal torsion bar suspension that Chrysler had introduced in and had used on all models up to that time. This allowed the wheels to move rearward, instead of straight up and down, when the tires encountered an object, thereby dampening the blow and "rolling with" the bump rather than resisting it. These components were attached to a K-shaped structural cross member, which itself was isolated from the unitized car body by four rubber mounts.

Personal note. The ride was much more like my plush Fury than my Valiant — and the wind noise was much, much lower. Overall, the Volare was every bit the leap forward that the magazines said it was. Yes, Chrysler was in another of its perennial crises. The company had new high-profit cars and trucks for the model year — full size cars, and long-overdue SUVs — just as the infamous fuel crisis was about to rear its head. Demand for big fuel guzzlers plummeted; Plymouth sold a record number of Valiants, but at a tiny profit margin. Record sales or not, Plymouth knew the aging Valiant was not going to last forever. However much they gussied it up with luxury appointments, it was still a design hearkening back to Finally, by , it was on its way How new was it? So new it even got a new name. Actually they were echoing Ford; instead of a new Falcon, Ford unveiled the Maverick, and allowed the old Falcon to hang around for a year.
Colt Vista. Exclusive to the base coupe was the optional SpaceMaker package, featuring a fold-down rear seat, a la the original Barracuda.

Devoted to remembering the lost automakers - great and not so great - of the last seventy-five years. Dedicated to remembering the lost car makers, the orphaned brands that are such a rich and entertaining piece of American automobile history. Given such a sampling of mid-seventies crud, I naturally thought the Volare was a fairly decent car. The Volare was probably the most memorable Plymouth of the s, but for all the wrong reasons. It was a memory most Volare owners - including my dad - would like to expunge. The Volare and its nearly identical twin, the Dodge Aspen were on the cutting edge of a new breed of compact cars. It was only an inch or two larger in any dimension than the 6-year old Valiant and Duster it would replace. Volare felt larger, too. This was done mostly by cutting corners on pre-production testing procedures.

Car currently runs and drives but needs tires and does not come with weld wheels shown in some of the pictures. The car is solid and only has one small rust hole in the bottom drivers side fender. Tire blew on the passenger front and moved the fender in enough so the door will not open with out causing paint damage so I have not opened the door. The damage is minor and can easily be fixed by adjusting the fender. Car is blue on blue and the interior is in good shape, I did remove the old carpet and have brand new carpet in the box to be installed. Can see the floors are in good shape and do not need patches or floor pans. Motor is a slant 6 and runs good also has a brand new radiator. This was an AC car and still has everything there but currently doesn't work, put freon in but I believe the compressor is shot.

These F-body cars were freshly styled and more aerodynamic, and the base models came with the tried-and-true Slant Six engine. But the bad rap had taken hold.
