Dwarf fortress stairs
Stairs allow creatures to travel across z-levels. They can be dug out or constructed. They need to be connected to other dwarf fortress stairs of the appropriate type to function.

The stairs below it reach up to connect, but they can't connect; the up stair doesn't reach dwarf fortress stairs, because it has a floor under it. It was telling me it already had a building, but removing the stockpile from the stairs solved my issue. It's bothersome to me as I usually build very vertically dependent cube forts.
