I drive a '97 that recently had a problem with the temperature gauge hit the red zone in traffic. The temperature didn't stay there long, though; I pulled into a parking lot to shut it off, but found the temperature would drop when it got moving, so I managed to limp it home. Found out that sure enough, the auxiliary electric fan was dead. It wouldn't do anything when I fed it 12 volts by jumpering the fan relay. So I replaced that, and the new fan does switch on when I give it power.

All of a sudden out of the blue, you glance down and notice that your coolant temperature needle is to the right of the 12 o'clock position, or horror of horrors the red light is on!

I had no idea that you should make this regular maint. With a leaky head gasket, you will get bubbles in the coolant and may even hear leaking air into the radiator. It's been a while, but I believe the coolant temp sensor and one other -- check your Bentley e36 manual. When cruising down the road at freeway speeds, with outside temperature less then desert conditions, the fan should be merely be idling along, turning just fast enough to add a little air flow when needed, in this way the fan noise and drag on the engine is greatly reduced. I had the same thing those are a pig to bleed! Great work.
