Spelling Shed uses the Science of Spelling to teach spelling, which includes using phonics as a base and drawing upon proven approaches such as teaching morphology, etymology and orthographic mapping as well as explicitly teaching spelling patterns.

The carefully selected word lists and engaging activities provide opportunities to incorporate phonics and meaning to strengthen spelling skills and build vocabulary acquisition. With lessons spread over six stages each lesson includes features to enhance the teaching and learning in your setting and is designed to be flexible to fit within the variable timetables that schools have. Based on phonics, morphology and etymology, it includes main teaching inputs, which can then be followed up with additional activities that can be carried out immediately after the input during an extended session or revisited throughout the week in order to consolidate the learning further. Our system gives access to over a million word lists, including our official lists and custom made lists. Our grammar curriculum covers all of the English National Curriculum expectations for spelling, punctuation and grammar. Each year group has small step learning episodes covering all key areas of the grammar, punctuation and spelling curriculum: Word, Text, Sentence and Punctuation. Each small step is linked to a National Curriculum statement. Spelling Shed is made by teachers, for teachers and was developed in the founder's classroom. We have built a suite of tools to enable teachers and schools to manage pupils' data, including reporting on assessments. Spelling Shed tracks student game plays along with their responses. Teachers can monitor weekly activity in order to advance or remediate as needed. Phonics Shed is designed to run from the Early Years Foundation Stage to Year 2; but can extend into Key Stage 2 for those children who need further support in phonics. It connects with the existing Spelling Shed scheme to ensure all curriculum objectives are met, while preparing the children for their Phonics Screening assessment using fast-paced progression through all common GPCs. Children are taught to say the sounds that make up a word and then merge the sounds together until they can hear what the word is. Use the online assignment tool to assign decodable ebooks to pupils, so they can access them on their logins to read at home. Assign particular games for pupils to practise specific GPCs after the lesson. There are a range of games to choose from. For each GPC we have essentially three lesson plans: a daily phonics session, a consolidation plan and an intervention plan. The intervention plans are short 10 minutes sessions, needing minimal resources.
