College students may fail along the road, and success in college is not guaranteed. College failure can significantly impact pupils and their ability to succeed there. It can even reach the point where the students are compelled to leave school. Nevertheless, for many college students today, effects of failing grades, failing has become the norm.
FutureEd Research Associate Vasilisa Smith interviewed Jim Schwartz, head leadership coach for the Network for College Success in Chicago, about the current grading landscape and its impact on student confidence and college-going. What does the current grading landscape look like? What have you been hearing from teachers and students? And consequently, every school has a very high number of students who are failing because attendance is lower during the pandemic. Our partner organization that we work with, the UChicago Consortium on School Research, has done a lot of that research and found that high school freshmen who fail more than one core class are more than three times less likely to graduate from high school.
Effects of failing grades
Failing a class in any grade, especially college, is far from optimal. However, it may sometimes be out of your control as a result of extenuating circumstances. Maybe you have health issues or family troubles. You could be working and balancing studying with your job. Or you might have simply given up on trying. But, in any event, there are consequences of failing. Your GPA is your grade point average. This means that receiving a fail or F gives you a zero. Yet, the class is still included when you divide by your total number of courses taken. As such, a fail can really cause your GPA to plummet. While your college GPA may not be of utmost importance if you plan to enter the workforce directly upon graduation, it is a big deal for those wanting to go to graduate school.

Academic course failure is perhaps surprisingly common in the US education system. However, it is unclear the degree to which these negative results may be driven by differences between students who do and do not fail, and whether all students are equally impacted. Drawing on research in life course theory, I argue that failure more broadly should not be understood as aberrant but as an important part of the developmental process. Using three large, longitudinal data sources with academic transcript information, and employing quasi-experimental methods where possible, I demonstrate that course failure can compound advantages or disadvantages to have substantial impacts on future outcomes that vary by gender and race. In Chapter 3, I use transcript data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth NLSY97 to show that while college remedial coursework benefits some students, the substantial number of students who fail remediation are considerably worse off e.
Students and parents have begun suing school districts over grading policies and practices they say are unfair. Grades are the primary basis for making important decisions about students. They determine whether students are promoted from one grade level to the next. They also determine honor roll status and enrollment in advanced or remedial classes, and they factor into special education services and college or university admissions. Teachers know how important grades are, too. In fact, teachers spend over one-third of their professional work time assessing and evaluating student learning.
