Belos was only mentioned by other characters for most of The Owl House 's first season before finally making his debut in episode Since then, he's been a formidable opponent for Luz Noceda and her friends. However, the show gradually peeled back more layers of Belos's past, revealing that there is far more to the Emperor than meets the eye. This has made Belos's timeline one of the richest stories in The Owl House. Originally a human named Philip Wittebane , he arrived in the Boiling Isles from Gravesfield, Connecticut during the Deadwardian Era the mids in the Human Realm in pursuit of his brother, Caleb , who was spirited away to the realm, keeping a written record of his experiences on the Boiling Isles as he endeavored to find a way to return to the Human Realm. Due to his inherent intense hatred of witches and magic , with which he gained additional resentment due to the Isles' prejudice against humans causing him to be alienated, Philip would eventually conspire to eliminate the Isles and its inhabitants as a whole in an attempt to save humanity from their supposed wickedness. In order to carry through with this plot, Philip would take on a new identity as a witch named Belos. He claimed to the witches that he had the ability to speak to the isle, that they were misusing magic by mixing it, and that he was the only one who had the right to do so, convincing them and creating a system of covens to restrict the witches' use of magic and knowledge, and those who resisted were declared "wild witches" who would face great punishments. Sometime later he was named emperor of the islands, gaining the respect and devotion of all, unaware of his deception. As emperor, he ruled the isles from his castle with the protection of his coven and his creation, the Golden Guard Hunter , where he would prepare for the Day of Unity , an event where he hoped to accomplish all his goals against the witches, while under the ruse it would bring a paradise to everyone on the isles. When a human named Luz Noceda happened upon the isles by fate, Belos sought her to claim the portal that brought her to the realm. Although only succeeding in obtaining the fragments of the portal, Belos started reconstructing it in secret and launched his campaign for the Day of Unity at the same time, ensuring the Demon Realm would perish by the time the portal returns him home. Belos' plot ultimately fails upon the release of the Collector , who destroys Belos' physical form, although Belos' remains make it through the portal at the last minute by latching onto Hunter during the escape.

He's remarkably calm and sounds sane despite living on the Boiling Isles for emperor belos years without visiting Earth even once, but that Mask of Sanity underscores his inability to confront reality in both Demon and Human Realm.

Didn't Think This Through : A repeating flaw of Philip's is that when he sets his mind on a goal, he's capable of planning extensively to achieve that goal, but never really considers whether it's compatible with the reality around him , or what he'd do once he'd actually achieved it. This part of Philip's life, and the order of certain events, is shrouded in mystery. After acquiring the Titan's Blood, which he later rationed, the vein which Philip and his traveling companions were traversing collapsed, resulting in said companions perishing within, possibly as the result of Philip's interference. Looking at his mask for 'Emperor Belos', it seems to be a cross between a bird and a deer's facial structure, symbolizing how he's merely mimicking the surface-level appearance of an all-powerful witch who rules over others, and thus shares in the bird motif of the rest of the cast, whilst his true nature is actually quite different to theirs. After his fight with Luz at the Titan's Skull, where he is blasted against the wall by the Collector, he's reduced to a puddle of goo, and is only able to get by via possessing living things; it's shown in "For the Future" that if he goes too long without a vessel, his body starts to break apart. It becomes a more straightforward example when he's revealed to be a False Prophet in "Hollow Mind", making up his supposed connection with the Titan and egalitarian agenda and actually being in a Faustian bargain with the Collector to wipe out witch kind, making the Coven System an Apocalypse Cult.
