I will forever mourn the 2 hour cut of this that supposedly went full Hellraiser inter-dimensional sex and gore but the version we've got is still a pretty nasty piece of textured sci-fi horror design work from anderson that owes a lot to Alien , Warhammer and Doom and has enough vividly rendered possessions, mutilations and portals to space hell to keep me coming back to it. Love how much time is spent observing these beautifully designed spaces in carefully considered compositions like the ships heart and the microchip vents in the first half so that we know exactly where every burning, rotting and dissected body is later on.
It isn't Alien or Solaris, but it has a lot of positives and I enjoyed it, but I don't plan to watch it again. Give this one a launch!

The film Event Horizon and its titular ship have something in common: both disappeared quickly from the public eye, only to reappear later with new life breathed into them. It was in and out of theaters in just a few weeks, but something miraculous happened when it found its way to video store purgatory, where movie lovers rediscovered the film and helped build its reputation as an underappreciated, even ambitious horror cult classic. Director Paul W. In the span of one year, Anderson and producer Jeremy Bolt built gigantic sets on the famous stage, cast a group of excellent actors, developed impressive special effects inspired by Clive Barker, and released the R-rated gorefest during the summer. For many longtime fans of the film, it was a whiff of validation for its pop culture relevance, which has been an uphill battle due to the general distaste for Paul W. Anderson and the critical and financial drubbing the film suffered upon its release. Anderson drew inspiration from The Shining , Alien , and paintings by Hieronymus Bosch and Pieter Bruegel, and you can clearly see their influences throughout. He has never been shy about the fact that he was a young director who was given a lot of money to make his cinephile dreams come true by showcasing his take on films that inspired him, but the movie also manages to stand on its own.

Weir, who has gouged out his own eyes and is possessed by the evil presence, uses an explosive device to destroy the Lewis and Clark which kills Smith and blasts Cooper into space. The film had a troubled production, with filming and editing rushed by Paramount when it became clear that Titanic would not meet its projected release. Andersen successfully creates a tense, depressing, and claustrophobic atmosphere. Top credits Director Paul W. Science Fiction Mystery Horror. After repeated home viewings it does lose its shock factor yet it is still a great film, though I have to add it really was meant for the big screen. Cooper and the rescue team try to calm the terrified Starck as the doors close. I'm a big fan of Joseph Richardson, but she somehow looks and feels a little out of place in a sci-fi movie, I couldn't really buy into her character, talented actress though she is. I wish all stupid derivative genre crap looked this good. Reset poster Reset for item Save changes Save for item. Having trouble? New York: Springer. I just think it would have been better with more extended peeks into hell, because who wasn't curious to see what the makers of the film came up with? Set in , it follows a crew of astronauts sent on a rescue mission after a missing spaceship, the Event Horizon , spontaneously appears in orbit around Neptune , only to discover that a sinister force has come back with it. Gets crazy just because it can, funny without shitty ironic winking. Flipboard Email. More like this. It seems to take the crew an age to get to their destination, and even when stuff is finally happening, the ending is quite choppy. It is smart, scary, and yes, even a little disturbing at times. Sam Neill Weir. To think he made this and Boogie Nights in the same year. Although it was announced in that producer Lloyd Levin had found a VHS tape that might contain a full version of the film, Anderson revealed in that neither he nor Levin had seen it yet, as they have both been too busy to be in the same country with a VHS player.
