The Evil Dead is a American supernatural horror film written and directed by Sam Raimi in his feature directorial debut. The story focuses on five college students vacationing in an isolated cabin in a remote wooded area. After they find an audio tape that, when played, releases a legion of demons and spirits, four members of the group suffer from demonic possession , forcing the fifth member, Ash Williams Campbell , to survive an onslaught of increasingly gory mayhem. Raimi, producer Robert G. Principal photography took place on location in a remote cabin located in Morristown, Tennessee , in a difficult filming process that proved extremely uncomfortable for the cast and crew; the film's extensive prosthetic makeup effects and stop-motion animations were created by artist Tom Sullivan. The completed film attracted the interest of producer Irvin Shapiro , who helped screen the film at the Cannes Film Festival. Horror author Stephen King gave a rave review of the film, which resulted in New Line Cinema acquiring its distribution rights.

Evil Dead is unmistakably one of the most incredible '80s horror franchises ever, but correctly watching the Evil Dead movies in order can be a difficult task, and Evil Dead Rise doesn't make it any easier. The franchise definitely needs clarification in order to get the full experience from Raimi's gore-laden, off-the-wall classics, the movie, and the spin-off TV show, as they're all canon, even the remake. The Evil Dead is loved by horror fans because it's so bombastic, outrageous, and contains weird high-concept plot elements. However, this also means that watching the Evil Dead movies in order creates a confusing timeline. Later, the franchise would continue with the spin-off TV series Ash vs. Evil Dead. However, due to legal reasons, aspects of Army of Darkness couldn't be mentioned in the series, though the cast and crew still consider the events of that movie part of the canon timeline. A remake titled Evil Dead was released in , but it actually turned out to be a soft reboot that's also canon. Evil Dead Rise surprisingly doesn't actually muddle the Evil Dead timeline further, but it brings the franchise into the modern day more than any other movie. Everything We Know. The Evil Dead franchise began all the way back in , and it became an instant hit despite having a microbudget.
The show ended on a cliffhanger, with someone claiming that there's " still work to be done " which means the hero of The Evil Dead franchise might not get to retire yet despite the cancelation of his titular show. Virgin Books.

Most horror franchises, regardless of how popular they may be, always seem to have at least one misstep entry. Even heavy hitters like Friday the 13th , Nightmare on Elm Street , and Halloween have one or more films that just couldn't match up to the original entries that made them hits. The same can't be said for the Evil Dead series, as not a single entry can really be considered "bad". Instead, the only word that comes to mind when one hears a chainsaw revving and an energetic Bruce Campbell quipping is the word "badass". What visionary filmmaker Sam Raimi accomplished with the original film is nothing short of extraordinary. Working on a budget of less than half a million dollars and in less-than-desirable working conditions, The Evil Dead defied all odds and became an instant cult classic, even earning a glowing review from acclaimed horror novelist Steven King. The film's cult classic status quickly evolved into a household name among every veteran horror aficionado, even becoming an established IP with two sequels, a remake, a television series, and an upcoming soft reboot. With the franchise set to finally return from its decade-long theatrical hiatus with the highly anticipated Evil Dead Rise , both long-time fans and eager newcomers may want to experience everything the franchise has to offer. This task is easier said than done, given the franchise's notorious rights issues, repeated continuity errors, and most of the entries being on different services.
