He was convicted of raping and killing 54 young boys between June and September , and was sentenced to lashes followed by execution. All the boys were between 8 and 15 years old. The murder of children around Tehran was recognized as the largest criminal case in Iran for the Contemporary history of Iran, and strongly influenced public opinion in the country. Muhammad Basjee, known as Bijeh, was born into a crowded family; he had six brothers and six half-brothers. When he was four years old, his mother died of cancer. Bijeh couldn't remember his mother and said that his father was a barbaric person who beat him and chained his legs during childhood. His father forced him to abandon school and work. He was 11 when he moved to Khatunabad with his family, where he began working at a furnace. Around then, he was raped multiple times. He admitted that he had been raped and wanted to take revenge on the community, and that he suffered from his mother's early death and the lack of affection he suffered in childhood. Bijah was arrested on 24 September and tried in Branch 74 of the Tehran Penal Code, under the presiding Judge Mansour Yavarzadeh Yeganeh and his four other lawyers, and by a majority of its judges. On 27 November , he was sentenced to be executed. Bijeh said that if he was not arrested, he would kill children. On 16 March , in Pakdasht , the town near the desert area where the killings occurred, in front of a crowd of about 5,, Bijeh's shirt was removed, and he was handcuffed to an iron post, where he received his lashings from different judicial officials.

Iran held its first parliamentary election Friday since mass protests over mandatory hijab laws following the death of Mahsa Amini , apparently drawing a low turnout amid calls for a boycott. It wasn't immediately clear if voter apathy or an active desire to send a message to Iran's theocracy depressed the number of voters coming to polling stations across the Islamic Republic. While state-controlled television broadcast images of lines of voters, others across the capital of Tehran saw largely empty polling stations. Officials including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei sought to link turnout directly to taking a stand against Iran's enemies. Others, including imprisoned Nobel Peace Prize laureate Narges Mohammadi , urged a boycott of a vote they derided as a "sham. Authorities broadly barred politicians calling for any change within the country's government, known broadly as reformists, from running in the election. Of about 15, candidates vying for seats in the member parliament, formally known as the Islamic Consultative Assembly, only are considered to be relatively moderate or pro-reform candidates. Meanwhile, Iran's economy continues to stagnate under Western sanctions over Tehran's rapidly advancing nuclear program and the country's arming of militia proxies in the Middle East and Russia in its war on Ukraine.

The election followed anti-government protests in that spiralled into some of Iran's worst political turmoil since the Islamic revolution and coincided with growing frustration over the sanctions-hit country's economic troubles. Partial results appeared to show hardliners set to keep their grip on parliament, while high-profile moderates and conservatives stayed away from Friday's election and reformists called it neither free nor fair as it was mainly a contest between hardliners and low-key conservatives loyal to Islamic revolutionary ideals. Mohammad Khatami, Iran's first reformist president, was among critics who did not vote on Friday. Imprisoned Nobel Peace Prize laureate Narges Mohammadi, a women's rights advocate, in a statement shared by her family with Reuters, called the election a "sham". The Hamshahri newspaper called the turnout "a million slap" to calls for an election boycott, in a front-page headline next to a depiction of a ballot paper smacking U. President Joe Biden in the face. The interior ministry may announce the official turnout later on Saturday. If the turnout figure is confirmed, it would be the lowest since Iran's Islamic revolution in
