In typical August Wilson fashion, the play begins with a whole bunch of stage directions. We're told that we're in the Maxson family's yard. Their ancient brick house is set off of an alley in a city neighborhood. There's a wooden porch that needs to be painted really badly. Some old beat-up chairs sit on the porch. There's a half-built fence around the dirt yard. Tools and lumber sit in a pile. A ball made of rags hangs from the tree. A baseball bat leans against the tree. It's Troy Maxson and Bono enter the yard in the middle of a conversation. Both men are black. We're told that Troy is a big guy. Bono has been Maxson's best friend for 33 years.

Divided into two acts, Fences begins on a Friday night—payday for Bono and Troy —when the two friends engage in a weekly ritual of drink and conversation. As they talk, we learn that Troy has confronted their boss, Mr. Rand , about the fact that only whites are assigned to drive the trucks at their garbage collection company, while black employees are hired exclusively to carry the garbage. Irritated by the fact that Bono feels the need to tell him this, Troy asks why Bono feels motivated to say such a thing. Troy eventually admits to having an affair with Alberta, and Bono tells him that he needs to find a way to make things right. Rose agrees to raise Raynell. In response, Gabriel dances hysterically, and August Wilson writes, in a note in the script, that the gates to Heaven are opened. Plot Summary.
