Now, when they published games in the West on the Super Nintendo, they were referred to as Squaresoft. Prior to that though, they were just Square on the NES. The 90s were a killer era for them. From Final Fantasy to Secret of Mana , it is time to rank them out. This is often the forgotten son in the Final Fantasy series. It actually feels more like a Dragon Quest game than anything else. This was the one game the Square office that was set up in North America made. Anyway, the combat is very similar to Secret of Mana, although the content is very different. And, the version of this game that the West got was not as polished as later ports of the game. It was praised at the time because of it. Overall Final Fantasy IV is a good entry in the franchise, but again, this version is not the best out there. Secret of Mana is actually the first Mana game released under its name in the West. It holds up a lot better than the recent PS4 remake.

I'd go in release order.

Each new entry involves high production values which the series is well known for, an involving story and fantastic music. The gameplay mechanics evolve with each new game, and ever since its initial release a multitude of spin offs have been released such as the ultra popular Final Fantasy Tactics series and the Crystal Chronicles series. The Final Fantasy series is known for having more entries in an RPG series than any other, including the plethora of spin-off titles released. Two major motion pictures have been created based on the video games, with one of them released in , titled Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within , being the most expensive movie based on a video game ever made. Notably, it was also the first movie ever to feature photo-realistic animated characters though sadly, the movie was a box office failure and drove the production company out of business.

Final Fantasy is now 35 years old, and that feels a little bit weird to say. Everyone knows it, and everyone has played at least one. But there is no one kind of Final Fantasy. Right back to its origins, Final Fantasy has always managed to innovate, iterate, and reinvent. And where did all of this creativity start?

From there, the series made an incredibly successful jump to 3D on the PlayStation 1 before the mainline series started to take more risks, including the elimination of turn-based battles and massively multiplayer online game MMO entries, and the latest game, Final Fantasy XVI , becoming a full-on character-action game. Most Final Fantasy games are at the very least good, while many are great — and others are masterpieces which is why we decided to rank all of the best Final Fantasy games. Other entries have been fully real-time before, but never quite as action-oriented as this. With staff consisting of those who previously worked on character-action games, specifically, Devil May Cry, Final Fantasy XVI plays like no other entry in the series and is far lighter on the typical JRPG mechanics most would expect. While that is a matter of taste, the story is a bit more of a mixed bag. It has great potential, and a very strong opening, but fails to maintain that level of quality and intrigue for its entire duration. Still, as an entry point to the series, or for those who want a fantasy game that is more active than other entries, this is a satisfying title to get engrossed in.
