Finn Mikaelson is an Original Vampire. He is the husband of Sage Mikaelson.

He served as the primary antagonist for most of the second season. Finn also had a recurring role in the third season of The Vampire Diaries , where he served as a minor antagonist and anti-villain. Finn was the first son and second child of Mikael and Esther. He was the younger brother of Freya , and the older brother of Elijah , Kol , Rebekah , and Henrik and the older half-brother of Klaus. Out of all of his siblings, Finn had the closest relationship with his mother. It was shown in the third season of The Vampire Diaries that he was strictly loyal to his mother and believes that her intentions are the best, as he was willing to sacrifice himself to kill all his younger siblings. Finn's behavior and attitude were what his siblings dislike about him the most.

Finn first appears in Bringing Out the Dead when he's undaggered by Elijah , and his first action is to stab Klaus in the hand with the dagger itself. Finn is the oldest of the siblings that were turned into vampires and is also the one who was daggered the longest--around years. He was in love with a woman named Sage back then, but when he comes back in the present day, he thinks she's long gone. Finn goes along with Esther 's plan of killing her children, and volunteers himself to be the one she kills, which will in turn kill the rest. Finn thinks of being a vampire as a curse and welcomes death. When the spell fails, he and Esther flee Mystic Falls. There he finds out that Sage is still alive and in love with him, which seems to reignite his will to live. He still doesn't like being a vampire or the idea of hurting people, and Sage is the only person he ever turned, but he seems to want to live to be with her. When many think of The Vampire Diaries and The Originals , they may forget Finn Mikaelson, especially compared to the many other characters. Used primarily as a melodramatic antagonist, he did nothing but go against his family until the very last minute. Finn is the oldest of the Mikaelson siblings. He is the first son and second child of Mikael and Esther, and he is the only one to have a relationship with elder sister Freya before her supposed death in the 10th Century. He was his mother's sole confidant in the truth about what happened to Freya, forced to keep her secret for the safety of his brothers and sisters. He never recovered from losing Freya, and, as a result, he could never bond with his other siblings.

At the beginning of the 11th century, the family was mortal until the loss of Esther and Mikael's youngest child, Henrik , to a werewolf attack spurred them to use Esther's magic to turn Mikael and the rest of their living children into the world's first vampires , from whom all vampires are descended. Dahlia granted this request, but made it clear that the magic had a price, and it was a price that Esther was forced to pay years later— her payment to her sister would be her first-born child, and the first-born of her children's children, and their children's children, for as long as Esther's line shall live. She then ordered Esther to pretend that her first-born, Freya , had died of a plague so that Mikael would never know what truly had happened to his daughter when he returned from battle. Afterward, Esther and Mikael heard from a Witch called Ayana , Esther's best friend and mentor, that there was a land where everyone was healthy and strong, a land that ended up being the New World, specifically what is now modern-day Mystic Falls. Mikael and Esther with Freya's surviving brother, Finn, and their recently born son Elijah traveled to this paradise with Ayana, where they settled in a village full of the healthy people they had learned about, who were revealed to be werewolves , and lived peacefully for years. Mikael often clashed with his middle son, Niklaus , with whom he had an antagonistic and abusive relationship which only became worse when Klaus and Henrik snuck out to watch the werewolves transform one night, where Henrik was accidentally mauled and killed.
