First released in by Intelligent Systems, a Japanese developer house closely affiliated with Nintendo, Fire Emblem is a series of tactical role-playing games, where armies of characters in a medieval setting trade blows with one another. The series was initially directed by Keisuke Terasaki, but the concepts and design are the brain child of Shouzou Kaga. Prior to this, the team had worked on the Famicom Wars series, which would become Advance Wars. Kaga decided he wanted to create a new experience, where instead of sending expendable cannon fodder after an enemy, the player would field a team of characters that they would actually care about. Thus would begin Fire Emblem's core concept from a narrative standpoint: every character you use on the field of battle is a named character with a background and story, losing them would mean that they're dead and gone forever, and the hope would be that the player wouldn't want to lose anyone on their journey. Future games would introduce concepts such as "Support", where individual characters would work together, learn things about each other, and possibly even end up as lifelong companions at the end of the game.
