I'm getting ready to drop my back in the Time to think about exhaust! It has a 2 bbl carb adapted to the stock 1 bbl manifold. It will be converted to Duraspark II. I have installed the split 4. From the ones I've seen in the old threads, most appear to have a short Y pipe close to the manifolds and run single from there back. My thoughts are to run the dual pipe back farther underneath and leave the O2 bung connection with the bung plugged as a crossover. Then run the dual pipes into a reversed Magnaflow muffler to get 2-in, 1-out arrangement and a single tail pipe side exit behind the rear wheel on passenger side. Another option is keep duals with side exits both sides or double tips on passenger side?? I saw that Dynomax mufflers have been used with good results -and even a tractor muffler!

But the V8 in my dad's old '57 Chevy sounds an awful lot like the v8 in my friend's Ford. You actually want to encourage "scavenging", which is the purpose of a cross-over, or "x" pipe.

Automakers have developed and built countless engines over the years, but few have achieved what you might call legendary status. The Ford cubic-inch inline-six is undoubtedly one of them. Even with meticulous upkeep they lose compression, crack castings, and blow head gaskets. Two of them from thrown rods, of all things. No one I know has had a running six for almost ten years now. Every manufacturer makes engines that will go a million miles with just oil changes, but the chance of owning one is worse than the lottery. I have to say that the loudest advocates for the have probably never owned one, which is why they think so highly of it and spread the myth of this engine. Many engines will do this including most Ford engines from this era. And the only people who like a well-mannered broken engine are car dealers.
