Need bike hire? You can shorten the trail with Hicksters Way Loop approximately 4 miles. A surfaced, circular route, suitable for all ages and abilities. The trail is best ridden in a clockwise direction, with link routes connecting to nearby villages and picnic sites. The Colliers Trail previously known as the Family Trail is one of the most popular traffic free cycle routes in Britain. Visitors can spot some of the local wildlife including wild boar, roe deer and even goshawk. For less confident riders or those with mobility challenges, we can provide adult trikes or a tandem on request.

The Colliers Trail is a circular 9-mile off-road cycling route around this beautiful ancient forest, well signposted and easy to follow, ideal for all ages and a great way to explore the Forest of Dean on two wheels. The most well known starting point for the trail is The Forest of Dean Cycle Centre at Cannop , bikes can be hired from here and there is a cafe, toilets, parking and a shop. However as the route is circular it can be begun from many easily accessible locations and if you are staying in the area you can even begin it from your holiday accommodation avoiding having to get into the car. Some of the paths on the trail are former railway lines so are long, straight and flat and the whole route has been especially surfaced so is ideally suited for all ages and abilities. The route passes through many highlights of the Forest including Cannop Ponds , the Forest of Dean Sculpture Trail at Beechenhurst , the lake at Mallards Pike and several collieries as well as passing close to a number of towns and villages with connecting routes if you are staying nearby. Part of the trail takes you along the old Severn and Wye railway line passing former stations at Drybrook Road, Cannop Wharf and Speech House where old railway signs can still be seen. There are lots of picnic spots and cafes along the way too, perfect for a well deserved break, so why not make a day of it and get out on your bikes and explore the Forest of Dean with the family? Experience this Generally considered a moderately challenging route, it takes an average of 3 h 46 min to complete. This is a very popular area for hiking, mountain biking, and running, so you'll likely encounter other people while exploring. The trail is open year-round and is beautiful to visit anytime. Dogs are welcome and may be off-leash in some areas. Great family ride with 5yo on his own single gear bike. My hybrid bike with road sport tyres survived but definitely a better suited route for mountain bikes.
The Colliers Trail is our family cycling trail - a fully waymarked, circular route, with connecting routes to villages and picnic sites. This route has been especially surfaced and is suitable for all ages and abilities. The trail follows the route of the old railway which served the many coal mines collieries around the Forest. The remnants of many of these former mines are still visible today, along with the station names. Fancy a shorter family route? This circular route takes you along National Cycle route 42 and the Wye Valley path through the delightful Forest of Dean. The easy route takes place on off road paths making it ideal for families. This route is also suitable for walkers. The trail passes close to the fascinating Forest of Dean Sculpture Trail. The trail takes you to a unique collection of high-quality, contemporary sculptures in a beautiful setting. You could also try the Coleford Milkwall and Parkend railway path. It is suitable for both cyclists and walkers. On the route you'll pass close to the Speech House Walk , near the sculpture trail. Near here you can also visit the Speech House Hotel and enjoy afternoon tea in the 17th century former hunting lodge.
