In the 16th century, Seville was the most important town in Europe. The riches of the New World arrived at its port and were then distributed throughout the continent. Here the gold and silver of America was minted in coins. It was named Nova Roma, because of its splendour, and the best Italian and Flemish artists of the time came to it. The best Renaissance combined with Gothic and Mudejar architecture in a harmony of styles unique in the world. It was in this context that the House of Salinas was built.

Casa de Salinas really stands out amongst them, as it is a year old palace that is permanently inhabited by its owners. Casa de Salinas, also known as Palacio de Los Marqueses de Salinas, was built in the 16th century with Renaissance influence in the oldest historic part of Seville. It was acquired by the Salinas family in the 20th century. After the family moved into the palace they started a lengthy restoration process, trying to return the palace to its glorious days, using mostly income from the guided tours to cover the costs of restorations and upkeep for the palace grounds. The family had 12 kids, two of whom still reside in the palace, together with their mother who is over years old. The guided tour is limited to the ground floor section of the palace, including the majestic courtyard. The courtyard is surrounded by Carrara marble columns with arches framing the galleries around it, with mosaic style windows framing the whole top floor. Many of the elements of the 16th century like the tiles and some of the doors were preserved in the courtyard. The first room you will visit is the summer dining room, with the original wooden ceiling from the 16th century and period furniture inside. The lounge room is the next one to visit, some of the highlights include a large painting by one of the sons who is a painter, and for me, it was pretty cool to see family photos displayed on the side tables. After that, you get to visit the library or reading room, followed by the Roman courtyard which was also stunning. As a last stop, you get a chance to venture up the stairs on the landing leading to the first floor, where you get a chance to admire a beautiful Mujedar-style ceiling.
