General Zod is a disgraced Kryptonian military leader who attempted an insurrection, resulting in his imprisonment to the Phantom Zone, general zod. In modern depictions, he is portrayed as having a grievance with the House of El.

Just as the El family is a staple among the Scientist guild of Krypton, the Zod family is a staple of the Military. The Kryptonian Science Council found Zod guilty of treason and sentenced him and his followers to be exiled to the Phantom Zone. Following the cosmic upheavals of the Rebirth period, this character's history was revised. By adulthood, Zod became a distinguished soldier in the Kryptonian military, rising to the rank of General.
