The 'Thrones' roller coaster becomes more extreme than ever. This is a Game of Thrones recap I have wanted to write for a long time. Dany escaping the Daznak fighting pit while riding Drogon is one of the most exciting and climactic moments in George R. Martin's novels. And the death of Shireen—which is not in the novels at least not yet, but apparently will be —is one of the most horrifying sequences in the show's history and something I've been privately obsessing over since first hearing about it. Thrones has always excelled at giving us moments of terror and triumph, but seldom have the highs and lows ever been so extreme, or come so quickly on top of each other, than in the past few episodes. In true Game of Thrones fashion, some parts dramatically pushed the envelope. It's been frustrating in recent weeks how Daenerys hasn't taken full advantage of her dragons as a source of hard-handed legitimacy to her rule. Even if roasting local elites at random wasn't the best intimidation tactic, the Mother of Dragons still needs her namesake to lay down the rule of the law. We wanted dragons, and this week we got them. After the recent scenes building up the emotional bond between Stannis and his daughter Shireen, you might conclude that this season might come to a close without Melisandre's plans for child murder playing out. But her witchcraft tends to have one distinct advantage: it works or at least she makes it seem like it does.

That was me a couple of weeks ago , predicting the exact opposite of what actually came to pass on Sunday as sweet Shireen, the greyscale-afflicted daughter of Stannis and the one thing that made the glowering lord of Dragonstone seem halfway human, was … Oh man. As losses go, this was one of the biggest the show has served up — by the basic standards of human decency, if not necessarily from a narrative logic standpoint. More on that in a minute. Stannis Baratheon, well outfitted and showing signs of a strong moral core to boot, was surging in the North. Stannis, it seemed, was ready to conquer and lead. Dany was not. The desperation and addled thronelust that Stannis showed in committing this despicable act, one that will alienate his most loyal associates he knew to send Davos away before the sacrifice , suggest less a kingly contender than a flailing pretender. Of course it was Ramsay Bolton who set the whole awful thing into motion, raiding Camp Stannis, burning the food, setting the horses aflame and otherwise pushing the wannabe king to the edge of his resolve.
