MacEwan's grandparents were Highland Scottish. These two had a son, Alexander MacEwen. After leaving home, Alexander went to Brandon, Manitoba to begin a farm of his own, and was introduced to Bertha Grant his neighbour James Grant's sister and soon got married. Bertha and Alexander were MacEwan's parents. Bertha was a devout Presbyterian.
It would be difficult to live in our city, or our province, without learning the name Grant MacEwan. A founder of Calgary Foundation and a passionate advocate of environmental causes, the iconic author, lecturer and politician left a permanent impression. He was elected to the Alberta legislature the same year, representing the riding of Calgary until He was also a respected professor at the University of Calgary and author of about 50 books, including many historical works detailing the settlement of the Prairies. Grant MacEwan was well into his 70s when he decided to build a log cabin by hand, the way the pioneers did, even digging the basement with a shovel. He was a recycler before it was fashionable, building the cabin from old telephone poles.
