At stake are the jobs and livelihood of hundreds of reporters, printers, delivery drivers, and related staff across three provinces. Fiera financed the deal. The fundamental business was never good, but the lawsuit allowed SaltWire to kick the can down the road a bit. Along the way, SaltWire closed some of its papers, consolidated others, turned daily papers into weekly papers, reduced and in some cases eliminated home delivery, and most recently started putting obituaries behind a paywall. Meanwhile, the financial side of SaltWire was collapsing. Fiera says that SaltWire has only paid about a third of the monthly payments required on interest on the loan, and none of the principal. If Fiera agreed, that LOI would present a strategy for SaltWire to refinance its debt by either finding a new investor or selling the business.
Newspapers are, and always have been, a mirror held up to reflect who we are, how our communities came to be, how we live our daily lives, and how we view the world around us. Newspapers, whether from last year or last century, are continually at risk — they're fragile, they haven't always been saved or been well taken care of, and the ones that have survived are usually accessible only in archives or libraries. Modern technology, however, is changing all this. Click on each image to begin exploring the surviving issues for that newspaper, for the years indicated — , digitized pages in all, accessible right now and from wherever you are in the world! This title is one in an unbroken chain of official and semi-official government newspapers published in Nova Scotia, from the Halifax Gazette on 23 March to the present-day Royal Gazette.
