One of the Naruto series' most noticeable features is that villains rarely remain such until the end, as their lives and perspectives are changed after fighting the series' main character. However, one particular villain's deeds were so vile that he didn't deserve to be redeemed by Naruto. In a world filled with powerful ninjas capable of incredible and terrible feats, war and violence ruled many of its lands with an iron fist. On Jiraiya's fateful mission to gather information on the terrorist organization Akatsuki's leader, he successfully infiltrated the Rain village and subtly captured and interrogated a shinobi guard. However, in chapter , titled "Regarding Pain," Naruto's mentor learned the brutal and terrible truth of what happened to the previous leader of Rain Village, Hanzo of the Giant Salamander, who was feared and respected throughout many ninja villages. The new lord of the Rain village and leader of Akatsuki, Pain, didn't just kill Hanzo; he made sure that anyone connected to him paid with their lives in an act of near-genocide that stands unparalleled in the entire series. The captured Rain ninja revealed to Jiraiya that the land's civil war had been long over thanks to "Lord Pain's Retribution. Even distant relatives and colleagues, down to the last infant Still, the absolute destruction of Hanzo's lineage and the killing of children who were only nominally connected to the former Rain Village leader feels more than a few steps too far, even if Hanzo killed Pain's best friend, Yahiko. The world of Naruto is surely a cruel one, but even the series' arch-villains, Madara Uchiha and Kaguya Otsutsuki, never displayed such utter disregard for human life. Even Orochimaru, who is seen performing experiments on human subjects like a mad surgeon, never reached the lengths that Pain did in his crusade against Hanzo. Killing everyone who was even remotely connected with the former leader of the Rain is very close to the concept of genocide. And yet, as it is customary for the series, at the end of Naruto's epic fight with Pain he ends up redeeming Nagato. That was a powerful moment for Naruto, who let go of his desire for vengeance for the death of his master Jiraya and the destruction of Konoha at the hands of Pain. Forgiving Nagato proved the strength of his conviction of wanting to end the seemingly endless cycle of hatred.

The Naruto series features an extensive number of exceptionally powerful shinobi , each equally capable of unrivaled feats. Hanzo of the Salamander is one such unparalleled shinobi, who eventually receded to the background despite boasting feats that clearly set him apart from the rest. Hanzo's role in the series is undeniable as he played a major part in shaping Naruto's premise. From bestowing the moniker of the Legendary Sannin to becoming the reason behind the Akatsuki's corruption, Hanzo has been a centerpiece to several major events. His anticlimactic demise, however, led to most forgetting about this once-powerful character. Still, there is much more to his characterization than meets the eye, as his strong-willed ideals of faith shaped the Hidden Rain Village and its legacy. Many know Hanzo as the unofficial leader of the Hidden Rain Village , yet his humble beginnings largely remain unknown.
When it died, its venom sac was embedded into his body in the hopes of creating a venomous ninja who himself was immune to toxins. This required him to wear a mask constantly, in order to protect others from his venom-laced breath. He went as far as giving him the antidote to his poison to give him a fighting chance, but then left without treating Mifune's injury. As a reward to them for this accomplishment, he named them Konoha's Sannin and told them to refer to themselves as such in exchange for letting them live. He lured Yahiko and Nagato to a meeting where he forced Nagato , Yahiko's team-mate, to kill Yahiko in exchange for Konan's life. However, Yahiko committed suicide by impaling himself upon Nagato's kunai to spare his friend the anguish and burden of killing him himself. Pain then systematically slaughtered every person he was ever in league, or affiliated with; from family and servants, to even ambassadors of the villages who he was associated with. He was guarded twenty-four hours a day, and did not allow anyone in his presence, even children, without being thoroughly searched. Although he viewed the Five Great Countries as his enemies, he was still willing to ally with foreign nations, even those who had caused him great harm, in order to remain in power. He was also willing to betray people without remorse, as seen by his leading the Ame Orphans and their team into a trap, then attempting to have them all mercilessly killed; this betrayal, ironically, led to his own demise.
