If you needed an apartment, or a used car, or a job, you picked up a newspaper and spent hours combing through the entire section of tiny-font classifieds, looking for anything that might possibly work, deciphering the acronyms that people would come up with because the newspaper was charging by the letter. This was a terribly inefficient way to get anything done, but in a pre-Craigslist era, we made do. I got my first two real full-time jobs — selling cut-rate layaway bedroom sets to broke people in an East Baltimore furniture store, stuffing envelopes at the Maryland State Bar Association — because of newspaper want ads. And in a different way, I got my first media job because of want ads, too.

An original member and cofounder of Honey Cone, Shelly has an extensive and diverse career in the entertainment industry. Beginning as a beguiling child star, she exploded onto the New York scene as a gifted dancer, singer and actress. She went on to dazzle audiences while touring nationwide with legend Cab Calloway in his renowned Cotton Club Revue. Wendy was educated at Norfolk State University in Virginia where she studied classical flute and piano. She moved to Los Angeles where her vocal talents immediately caught the attention of soul genius Ray Charles. Wendy has been a featured soloist with many great bands, including The Count Basie Orchestra and soul quartet The Friends of Distinction. She was the first African American woman in history to do so. Born in Washington DC, Kathy started her career at eight years old in the world of dance.
