It was pointed out by those in charge of the desk renovation that the practice of sticking gum on the underside of the school desks was one of the most unsanitary practices that school children indulge in. A child will carefully place his gym under the desk for safe keeping and at recess will casually reach under and get a chew — maybe it will be his chew, but the gum he gets may have been placed under the desk by some child who occupied the desk the year before.
